About this Site

This new (2000-2007) version of the TDC website is built of HTML, CSS, and images only. No JavaScript was used or harmed in the construction process.

In 2005, the site moved major material to a table-free HTML and CSS composition, allowing for wider variations in the presentation of the texts and faster design changes.

Theme and Scheme :

This current styling is a transitional design as the TDC moves to a look-and-feel devised for TDC by Roger Black in 2007-2008. Return later in 2008 for the full effect.

Emblem and Banner :

The TDC logo emblem was drawn by Gerard Huerta. The current banner mark is in Franklin ITC Pro by David Berlow of Font Bureau. Overall design theme is after designs by Roger Black.

Markup :

The HTML is version 4.01 Transitional, and uses a mix of strict structural markup with some presentational elements for æsthetic rendering in older visual browsers.

Particular care has been taken to ensure that content will adapt to fit within the width of any visual browser window, and still be clear and understandable in other browsers whether purely textual, aural, or tactile.

Style Sheets :

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are used to suggest colors and scalings for various elements. No absolute sizes are used; instead, all style sheet scalings are based on the em unit set by the viewer's preferred text size.

However, for printing pages, a style sheet for printing is used where text is set to 10pt.

For text, the CSS suggests a series of possible fonts for use: Franklin ITC Pro Light, News Gothic, Arial, Helvetica.

For headlines, the CSS suggests the same, but with the Medium weight of Franklin.

Depending on their availability on your system, you will see one or the other. In the absence of these fonts the browser will use its default font as you have set it set in your browser. Not all browsers obey or honor all aspects of style sheets. Style sheets are an optional enhancement to structural textual markup, and can be ignored at the viewer's option.

Typefaces :

Should you, the type-aware viewer, wish to view this site in your favorite typeface, you may still do so by making a user style sheet (user.css) that contains a line such as
* {font-family:"Favoredfontname" ! important;}
Point your browser to find the style sheet and your favored font will be used to override the suggestions made by Web authors.

The same user style sheet technique can be used to adjust your browser for type size
p {font-size: 12px/15px ! important;}
or
p {font-size 24pt/32pt ! important;}
