The Film :

The famous film of the last night of hot-metal typesetting at The New York Timeson July 3 1978. Popcorn provided.

The Speaker :

Carl Schlesinger retired from the NY Times after many years of service, mostly as a linotype operator. He conceived the idea for the documentary film "Farewell etaoin shrdlu" which was produced and directed by David Loeb Weiss. Mr. Schlesinger was Director of Education for the New York Typographical Union and later Chief Technical Adviser on a project to expand a printing school in Nairobi, Kenya. He lived in Kenya with his family for 8 years. He is co-author of one book and author of another, both on printing subjects.
