Winners' Night: TDC 56 TDC2 2010 TDCIntro 010

Winners, members, students, glitterati of the New York type world and the merely curious converged on The Cooper Union Tuesday evening, July 20th, for the opening of the 56th annual international competition exhibition. The TDC event of the year was bigger than ever with the debut of TDC Intro 010, a brand new competition recognizing excellence in title design. Jakob Trollbäck launched the competition—highlighting a field long-overdue for official recognition—and it will be exciting to see it evolve. Watching the screening of winning motion graphics entries from cinema and television in The Rose Auditorium had everyone looking for the bucket of popcorn. Luckily this was a catered party and we all found plenty of finger foods to choose from. So with generous pours in hand attendees adjourned to The Cooper Gallery to review the winning work. Two hundred forty two winning entries from 20 countries for TDC56, and 16 winners from 7 countries for TDC2 1010 made for an incredible, almost overwhelming (but in a good way!) installation. There was a definite preponderance of the hand drawn and the decorative in the featured work, with nods and references to historicism in general and the nineteenth century in particular. After a good 2+ hours security had to flash the lights several times to tear people away from the gallery. So winners and next years hopefuls—yes, you can see the entries in the end-of-year annual, but its well worth going and studying the impressive crop of work in person while you can. On view at The Cooper Union until August 19th.

Beautifully Banal

Thanks to all who participated in the Beautifully Banal silent auction.

The Type Directors Club in conjunction with Cardon Copy had asked the following designers to find a classified/personal newspaper ad from their local community to "hijack" typographically. When redesigned, the once banal and disposable classified ads were reinterpreted by the designer into a one-of-a-kind collectible poster. The posters were designed by Gail Anderson, C2F Studio, Catalogtree, Stephen Doyle, John Downer, Tina Roth Eisenberg, Matthias Ernstberger, Ed Fella, Louise Fili, Jeffrey Fisher, John Gall, Graphiatrist, Leftloft, Ariane Spanier, Superscript and Alex Trochut.

The TDC Scholarship Fund benefitted from the proceeds.
