Rabari : A hand embroidered textured multi-colored
Description
“Rabari”—a Latin script typeface based on the pastoral Kutchi bharàt (embroidery) of the formerly nomadic Dhebaria Rabari community based in Kutch, Gujarat, India. The Rabari camel herders led a nomadic life in search of pasture. The women practice embroidery as an expression of their culture while on the move. Just as camels are an important aspect of their wealth, so is their bharàt which is passed down from mother to daughter. Unlike Adolf Loos’ charge that ornament is associated with “primitiveness”, the Rabaris, have a sophisticated system of codification based on their detailed embroideries which depicts the rites of passage of a woman, for instance. The Rabaris believe that their embroidery—which were traditionally based on plant motifs—represent the lushness of an oasis. The Rabari typeface comes in two versions—Rabari Rangberangi—a multi-colored typeface and—and Rabari Bharàt which has different styles with varying densities.
