Tattour 2025 Identity
Description
Tattour Hong Kong is a global festival fostering cultural exchange between local and international tattoo artists. To bridge linguistic divides, we developed a typography-driven visual identity rooted in a 200-year-old linguistic tradition: Cantonese Pidgin English.
We transliterated every foreign artist’s name into Cantonese characters, then collaborated with 55 participants to identify their unique stylistic features. From these insights, we crafted 55 bespoke Cantonese typefaces, each acting as a typographic translation of an artist’s personal aesthetic and belief.
By integrating these custom type designs into dynamic compositions, the visual identity transforms a global event into a uniquely Hong Kong experience — celebrating the intersection of ink, vernacular language, and heritage.
