Momochidori Variable
Description
This project challenges the long-standing square paradigm of Japanese type design. While Japanese characters have traditionally been constructed within a 1000 × 1000 unit framework, this typeface redefines the glyph boundary through a variable proportional system shifting between 870 × 1130 and 1130 × 870.
Built as a multi-axis variable font, it integrates proportional transformation, weight variation, and an independent italic axis for the Latin script within a unified structure. As one dimension expands and the other compresses, structural coherence and legibility are preserved across continuous interpolation.
Kana reference moments of historical expressive freedom, while kanji are systematized to support an extensive character set. In both vertical and horizontal composition, proportional flexibility generates new rhythmic possibilities beyond uniform square metrics.
By incorporating COLRv1 color technology, the project extends variable typography into layered color expression within a single font architecture.
