Inspired by traditional Japanese patterns, ALPHABET KNOT explores the intersection of cultural heritage and contemporary graphic expression. Each letter is formed by combining two geometric symbols derived from twelve traditional patterns, creating six unique alphabets that bring harmony and rhythm to letterforms. The project reinterprets centuries-old motifs through a modern typographic language.
ALPHABET KNOT draws on patterns that have been used in Japan for centuries, translating their intricate geometries into a contemporary visual language.
For each of the six alphabets, I selected two patterns from a collection of twelve, created a symbol for each, and joined the corresponding shapes together. The resulting forms bring together the visual characteristics of traditional Japanese motifs and the structure of the Latin alphabet.
The project was also presented as an installation at TDSNBXDXD, supported by TOKYO DESIGN STUDIO New Balance and DICE&DICE, in Fukuoka, Japan.
