“Signal: An American Type Foundry in Dublin” with Max Phillips
Type Directors Club, New York
June 16, 2019
In 2013, type designer Max Phillips followed his Irish wife from New York City to Dublin and found a close-knit, fast-growing, and welcoming design community. In this video, he speaks about running a small type foundry in a new country, collaborating with Dublin designers on Dublin institutions, and learning what “Irish” means from Irish people continually answering that question for themselves.
Max Phillips is proprietor of the Dublin-based Signal Type Foundry & Drawing Office, which specializes in type design, lettering, and branding. A former novelist and toy designer, he now makes useful, attractive things for clients like An Post, Bewley’s, CBS, Christie’s, Citi, FAO Schwarz, and Trinity College Dublin, and collaborates with studios and agencies in Ireland and abroad. His work has been recognised by the Type Directors Club, Communication Arts, Graphis, and the ISTD.
