SUMMARY:NYC Print Exhibition: Connection\, Community & Values -- Inside the Facebook Analog Research Lab
DESCRIPTION:You’ll see posters and printed matter of the Facebook Analog Research Lab and its Designer-in-Residence program\, which was established in 2016\, to put ideas\, critical questions\, and visual interventions into the spaces that people inhabit. \nSee how these hand-crafted artworks are opening doors to new ways of looking at the world\, finding community\, inviting dialog\, and creating positive friction that meaningfully affects people. The works ask questions\, intersect social values\, and provoke important questions with the aim to open minds to new ideas and perspectives. \nThe show features work by Facebook’s Artists in Residence\, including Elana Schlenker\, Kaye Blegvad\, Eddie Perrote\, Luiza Dale\, and others. The show is curated by Scott Boms\, a cross-disciplinary graphic designer and printmaker\, who serves as the global design lead at the Analog Research Lab\, Facebook’s in-house design and art making studio. \nThe exhibition is free and open to the public Monday to Friday\, 9 am to 4 pm by appointment only. Call 212-633-8943 or email director@tdc.org for an appointment. \nFacebook Analog Research Lab:\nInstagram: @analoglab\nFacebook: @analoglab \nWebsite: http://scottboms.com\nInstagram: @scottboms\nTwitter: @scottboms\nFacebook: @scottboms

SUMMARY:Type Design for Non Type Designers
DESCRIPTION:Get a crash course in designing type from Matteo Bologna\, Creative Director of award-winning studio Mucca Design. \nThis (always sold out) 6 hours workshop will introduce you to the basic skills necessary for the wild journey into the super fun world of\ntype design. \nThis class will teach you the basics of designing and generating a typeface with the font-design software Glyphs (Mac only). \nIn the morning session we will learn the basics of drawing a font\, generate the font\, and use it in InDesign. In the afternoon\, we will add additional letters to the font\, learning how to kern them\, add diacritics\, and produce the combined letters. At the end of the day\, we will not have a finished font\, but a respectable start and hopefully you’ll be infected with the type making bug. \nRequirements: \n\nBasic Adobe Illustrator skills are necessary.\nYou must bring your own laptop with a full or trial version of the font design program Glyphs already installed (download a free 30-day trial). Sorry no Windows\, no Fontlab\, no Robofont.\nNo prior experience is required in font design\, but some experience with Bézier-based vector drawing tools is useful.\n\nAbout Matteo Bologna \n \nMatteo Bologna is the principal of Mucca Design\, where he also serves as Creative Director. Under his direction\, the Mucca Design team has solved numerous design challenges and created uniquely successful work for a wide variety of global companies like Sephora\, Whole Foods\, Victoria’s Secret\, Barnes & Noble\, Adobe Systems\, Bacardi and Target. With his team he designed the identities for a variety of now classic New York City culinary destinations like Balthazar’s and Brooklyn Fare. \nMatteo is also the principal of the new Mucca spin-off type foundry muccaTypo. \nMatteo is a past president of the Type Directors Club and former board member of AIGA/NY. He frequently lectures about branding and typography around the world.
