SUMMARY:TDC65 Exhibition at Sheridan College in Oakville\, Ontario
DESCRIPTION:From October 1 to November 1\, 2019\, Sheridan College’s Trafalgar campus in Oakville is presenting The World’s Best Typography exhibition\, featuring the winning work of the Type Director Club’s 65th Annual Communications Design and 2019 Typeface Design competitions. \nThe exhibition\, sponsored by Sheridan College and the Sheridan Typographic Hub\, is on view on campus until 10:00pm daily in the Sheridan Library Learning Commons — easy driving distance from Toronto\, Hamilton\, and Buffalo. \nThis year’s annual juried exhibition includes hundreds of works that features typography in a wide range of categories including books\, posters\, corporate branding\, logos\, web graphics\, film and TV titles\, products\, and magazines. \nProfessional and student communications design work from many countries will be on display\, including the United States\, France\, Germany\, Japan\, Spain\, the Netherlands\, the United Kingdom\, the People’s Republic of China\, South Korea\, and others. \nVisitors will have an opportunity to experience the works up close\, pick up the books\, examine the exquisite bookbinding\, touch the packaging\, and look through the printed magazines. \nThis event is free and open to the public seven days a week. SUMMARY:New Signs for a New Subway
DESCRIPTION:Join renowned signage designers Chris Calori and David Vanden-Eynden as they describe their experiences designing the signage for the first four stations of the new Second Avenue subway line in New York City. Their talk includes an introduction to signage basics\, a brief history of the subway and its signage\, commentary on using New York City Transit graphic standards and working with engineers and architects\, and various anecdotes about the project. \nSignage design is an intricate\, complex process that marries the graphic\, architectural\, and industrial design disciplines. Chris and David will show how typography with other elements are comprehensively combined to help people navigate the underground world of New York’s newest subway stations. Explore this multifaceted avenue of visual communication; there is far more to it than you would think! \n \nChris Calori and David Vanden-Eynden\, former principals of CVE Design\, literally wrote the book on signage design. Their book\, Signage and Wayfinding Design: A Complete Guide to Creating Environmental Graphic Design Systems\, is the go-to reference on communication in the built environment. They are Fellows of the SEGD (Society for Environmental Graphic Design)\, and built an award-winning\, internationally recognized design office devoted to making people’s lives better with thoughtful\, visually-compelling signage and wayfinding programs. \nTogether or singly\, Chris and David have spoken at professional events\, taught at notable universities\, judged design competitions\, and are current or former members of several design organizations. Their firm’s work has received numerous awards and has been extensively published worldwide.
