SUMMARY:TDC65 Exhibition at Sheridan College in Oakville\, Ontario
DESCRIPTION:From October 1 to November 1\, 2019\, Sheridan College’s Trafalgar campus in Oakville is presenting The World’s Best Typography exhibition\, featuring the winning work of the Type Director Club’s 65th Annual Communications Design and 2019 Typeface Design competitions. \nThe exhibition\, sponsored by Sheridan College and the Sheridan Typographic Hub\, is on view on campus until 10:00pm daily in the Sheridan Library Learning Commons — easy driving distance from Toronto\, Hamilton\, and Buffalo. \nThis year’s annual juried exhibition includes hundreds of works that features typography in a wide range of categories including books\, posters\, corporate branding\, logos\, web graphics\, film and TV titles\, products\, and magazines. \nProfessional and student communications design work from many countries will be on display\, including the United States\, France\, Germany\, Japan\, Spain\, the Netherlands\, the United Kingdom\, the People’s Republic of China\, South Korea\, and others. \nVisitors will have an opportunity to experience the works up close\, pick up the books\, examine the exquisite bookbinding\, touch the packaging\, and look through the printed magazines. \nThis event is free and open to the public seven days a week. SUMMARY:TDC64 Exhibition at University of Bridgeport
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the SASD Graphic Design department brings to the Schelfhaudt Gallery an extraordinary display of communication design\, typography\, and type design. This year is new and different in the best ways — new works by world-class graphic designers\, new works by new practitioners of design working in posters\, books\, identities\, interactive\, environmental\, editorial\, and work by graphic design students.  \nThe Schelfhaudt Gallery is open to the public Tuesday–Friday from 11am to 4pm\, and on Saturday from noon to 4pm. The TDC64 exhibition will be on view until January 11\, but visitors are advised to call ahead to make arrangements to see the exhibition on weekends and during the school's annual winter break (Friday\, December 12\, 2019 through Saturday\, January 11\, 2020). \nThis TDC64 exhibition opens in Bridgeport\, Connecticut following the exhibition’s tour to Tokyo\, Seoul\, Warsaw\, New York\, Antwerp\, Ontario\, Saigon\, Auckland and several cities in Spain\, including Barcelona\, Sabadell\, Soria\,and Madrid. TDC64 is finishing its tour at the University of Bridgeport\, where the works become part of the SASD GD Archives. \nThe exhibition displays typography in a wide range of categories including books\, posters\, magazines\, fanzines\, multimedia applications\, and animation pieces from many countries including the United States\, France\, Germany\, Spain\, the Netherlands\, the United Kingdom\, the People’s Republic of China\, South Korea\, and others. \nExhibition visitors can read about the book that received the Best in Show award here\, and the award-winning student work here. \n\nThe exhibition features eighteen typeface design winners selected from over 225 entries from 39 countries. SUMMARY:Type x Graphic Design: Emerging Global Practices
DESCRIPTION:We explore this question through conversations with recent design graduates Pragun Agarwal (MICA)\, Ivy Li (VCU)\, and Beatriz Lozano (University of Michigan). Through their work\, these practitioners hailing from international and local backgrounds touch upon difficult issues of translation and reception of visual culture and ideas. What can all designers learn from their experiences? \nEmerging Global Practices is the first in a three-part Type x Graphic Design series on global typography and design by AIGA NY and the TDC. \nGraphic designer and educator Jason Alejandro will moderate the panel\, which includes recent graduates from the Maryland Institute College of Art\, University of Michigan\, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Each panelist will present their work for 15 minutes\, followed by a 30-minute discussion. \nEvent Series: Fresh Dialogue\nType x Graphic Design: Emerging Global Practices is part of the Fresh Dialogue event series. These events are critical discussions that focus on current events\, issues of cultural relevance and emerging topics in the world of design. \nPanel Moderator\nJason Alejandro is a graphic designer and educator based between New York City and Philadelphia. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at the College of New Jersey. Jason has taught at Rutgers University\, Kean University\, Lehigh University\, and the University of Pennsylvania. Previously\, he was an art director at JK Design and a book designer at Princeton University Press. Jason received an MFA in Graphic Design from Vermont College of Fine Arts\, and his work has been recognized by Communication Arts\, Society of Typographic Arts\, Association of University Presses\, and the Book Industry Guild of New York. He maintains an independent design practice focused on publishing\, education\, and typography. Select clients include Johnson & Johnson\, Princeton University\, MIT Press\, University of Chicago Press\, Verso Books\, and Rolling Stone. \nSpeakers\n\nPragun Agarwal is a graphic designer from India\, and a fresh MFA Graduate in Graphic Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA)\, Baltimore. He is originally from New Delhi where he was born and brought up before moving to Ahmedabad to finish his design education from the National Institute of Design (NID). After his graduation in 2014\, he worked at Codesign for three years and successfully completed an internship at Pentagram in the summer of 2018. Pragun has constantly pushed his learning of calligraphy\, lettering\, and typography by experimenting with different styles\, techniques and tools. He has applied his understanding of these mediums in different personal and commercial projects over the last few years. \nYixue (aka Ivy Li) is a designer working between China and the United States. She is interested in how global products/identities are made\, transported and consumed\, and the inevitable ‘mis-’ in acts of transmission. She stands with things and humans that are misread\, mispronounced\, misfitted and mistranslated when they traverse social and cultural borders. She holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and is currently at Wkshps. \nBeatriz Lozano is a designer at Sunday Afternoon and former designer in residence at Morcos Key. She holds a BFA from the University of Michigan and is currently exploring custom type\, 3D\, and motion design. Originally on the path to becoming a mechanical engineer\, Beatriz shifted to graphic design as her involvement in immigrant rights activism exposed her to the power of visual communication. \n  \n\nType x Graphic Design: Emerging Global Practices is organized by AIGA NY and co-sponsored by Type Directors Club in collaboration with the School of Art\, Media\, and Technology at The New School. \nGraphics: Beatriz Lozano \n
