SUMMARY:Design at the crossroads of the Old and the New with Gabriel Martínez Meave
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, G.M.Meave tells us about his work and influences\, from his life-long fascination with ancient Mexican codices to his fondness of Gothic letterforms\, and the challenges of being a designer at the crossroads of the old and the new\, the functional and the ornamented\, the indigenous and the foreign. How extremely divergent cultures such as the Maya and the Spanish strive to make a common\, hybrid\, contemporary visual language\, and the ups and\ndowns of being a type designer in Latin America. \nGabriel Martinez Meave is a Mexican designer\, calligrapher\, type designer and illustrator\, working in Mexico City. He has executed artistic\, commercial and corporate projects for clients such as Google\, José Cuervo\, Corona and Kellogg’s. He has made illustrations and cover art for books by Cornelia Funke\, Juan Villoro\, Gabriel García Márquez\, among other authors. He has won numerous awards from the TDC\, the ATypI and a!Diseño. He is professor and lecturer at various universities in Mexico and abroad.
