SUMMARY:Postponed - With a Cast of Colored Stars - A Talk with Kelly Walters
DESCRIPTION:In design\, visual expression is informed by an understanding of history\, language\, symbols\, patterns and image aesthetics. It is imperative that designers have a strong foundation in these areas in order to support the creation of culturally conscious work. Despite this awareness\, there remain gaps in design history that neglect showing a broad spectrum of visual languages from the past and excludes discussions on how design has been complicit in forming and reinforcing racism. \nThrough historical archival research and the act of experimental printmaking\, my research aims to highlight the linguistic phrases used in promotional Black film posters during the Jim Crow through Blaxploitation eras. By extracting typographic elements such as “an all colored cast” or “with a cast of colored stars\,” Kelly Walters is able to closely examine examples of segregation while also re-contextualizing them for new alternative platforms. In looking closely at typographic details\, language\, and gestures\, identifiable patterns emerge pointing to shifts in communication styles and cultural representation in this area of poster design. \nAbout Kelly Walters\nKelly Walters is a designer and educator whose work investigates the intersection of black cultural vernacular in mainstream media. Her research practice is deeply intertwined with the molding and shaping of cultural identity\, and an investment in making visible historical visual expressions that reclaim a Black voice within the field of graphic design. In her independent design studio Bright Polka Dot\, she produces print and digital ephemera for publications\, exhibitions and social campaigns. She currently is an Assistant Professor of Communication Design at Parsons School of Design at The New School in New York. \nWebsite: https://brightpolkadot.com/ \nInstagram: @brightpolkadot

SUMMARY:Robert Finkel and Shea Tillman: Visual Memoranda - IBM Poster Program 1969-1979
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening night of our new exhibition\, Visual Memoranda: A Selection of Posters from the IBM Poster Program 1969-1979.  Curators Robert Finkel and Shea Tillman will be there to share their research about this corporate design venture and speak about the designers whose works are on display. \nThe decades following World War II ushered in an era of unprecedented growth for International Business Machines (IBM)\, as innovations in electronic data processing and the miniaturization of transistor-based electronics transformed the company into a multibillion-dollar colossus. \nDuring this period\, Thomas J. Watson Jr.\, president of IBM\, sought to elevate the company’s image as a forward-thinking\, technologically-advanced organization by hiring world-renowned design consultants\, including Eliot Noyes\, Charles and Ray Eames\, and Paul Rand (who designed the instantly recognizable IBM logo and held a remarkable influence over internal staff designers.) \nThe IBM Poster Program was initiated in the late 1960s by staff designer Ken White\, who had studied under Rand at Yale. It was also during this period that Tom Bluhm transferred into the team\, having worked as a contract illustrator for IBM in Rochester\, Minnesota. Shortly thereafter\, Ken’s former colleague John Anderson was also added to the staff. \nWebsite preview here. \nThis exhibition is open for viewing from June 6 until Thursday\, August 1st\, 3 p.m. by appointment only. The TDC office is closed on weekends.

SUMMARY:David Berlow: Beyond the Quest for the Perfect Uppercase Partial Differential
DESCRIPTION:This free event will be streamed live from Google HQ in New York City on the TDC YouTube Channel: TDC YouTube \nThe YouTube event will go live at 5:5o pm EST\, and the program will begin at 6:00pm EST. Join us for a memorable event! \nThe last 30 years has seen a great growth in generalized glyphs and styles. David Berlow's talk will show what happens to and for typography when we start to get more specific about the fonts\, and thus the glyphs we design by having more generalized fonts. \nThe first part talks about glyphs and illustrates how different scripts form ideas\, words\, and texts. Next\, David will discuss how this effects the design of glyphs over a size range and then how this affects the design of styles that can be specified to work together in web and print environments. He will then demonstrate and describe inter-script\, inter-class and inter-style typography\, and conclude with a question-and-answer session. \nDavid Berlow entered the type industry in 1978 as a letter designer for Mergenthaler. He joined the newly formed Bitstream in 1982. Berlow left Bitstream in 1989 to found The Font Bureau with Roger Black. In 2008\, Berlow launched Webtype with Petr van Blokland and others. In 2016\, with Font Bureau and other foundries\, he created Type Network. \nType Network: Website \nFollow David Berlow on Twitter: @dberlow \nRead more about David Berlow here. \nThis event is being held in association with NYC x Design:

SUMMARY:The Twilight of Letterpress: New York in the 80s
DESCRIPTION:Ron and Dean interviewed the various proprietors and photographed their shops\, their studios\, and representative samples of their work. Little did any of them know that what was coming to an end in the city was not only letterpress\, but the whole printing industry itself. Ron will show Dean’s nostalgic and evocative photos again in a re-creation of a talk originally given in 1984\, and reflect on printing in New York the last 35 years.\nPittsburgh Metal Foundry \nRon Gordon (in hat) \nRON GORDON studied printing\, typography\, and book design with two great masters\, Leonard Baskin and Joseph Blumenthal\, and then founded his own Oliphant Press in 1970 to carry on the tradition of fine printing and design. Beginning as a letterpress printer\, Ron adapted his style and skills as the craft shifted to computer typesetting\, offset lithography\, and now\, digital printing. \nHis work has been exhibited at the Amherst College Library\, the RIT Cary Collection\, and the Club of Odd Volumes\, in Boston. Ron has taught workshops at the book arts centers at Wells\, Wellesley\, Dartmouth\, and RIT. He has trained numerous assistants and interns\, and has lectured at libraries\, colleges\, and book clubs all over the country.

SUMMARY:The Right Kind of Wrong: Inside the Facebook Analog Research Lab
DESCRIPTION:You’ll see posters\, printed matter and installation work of the Facebook Analog Research Lab and its Designer-in-Residence program established in 2016. Scott Boms will offer a rare view and chart the evolution of the values and mission of this unique organization — the what\, the how\, and most importantly\, the why. \nScott will talk about how and why Facebook decided to put ideas\, critical questions\, and visual interventions into the spaces that people inhabit\, and how these hand-crafted artworks are opening doors to new ways of looking at the world\, finding community\, inviting dialog\, and creating positive friction that meaningfully affects people. \nScott Boms is a cross-disciplinary graphic designer and printmaker. As the global design lead at the Analog Research Lab\, Facebook’s in-house design and art making studio\, he is responsible for creating and guiding projects that ask questions\, intersect social values\, and provoke important questions with the aim to open minds to new ideas and perspectives. \nThe evening will feature a panel discussion featuring Facebook’s past Designers in Residence: Elana Schlenker\, Kaye Blegvad\, Eddie Perrote\, and Luiza Dale. \nWebsite: http://scottboms.com\nInstagram: @scottboms\nTwitter: @scottboms\nFacebook: @scottboms \nFacebook Analog Research Lab:\nInstagram: @analoglab\nFacebook: @analoglab
