SUMMARY:Type Walk with Paul Shaw: From Murray Hill to the United Nations
DESCRIPTION:For Creative Week in New York Cit\, Paul Shaw's tour will include such iconic New York lettering venues as the Empire State Bulding\, the Chanin Building\, Tudor City\, and the Beaux Arts Institute of Design. But it will also look at the mundane and often overlooked examples of lettering in the city such as door handles\, house numbers\, and manhole covers. There will be Gothic\, Art Deco\, and script letters; blackletter and classical roman capitals. \nPaul Shaw is a designer and a design historian. He has been leading lettering tours of New York City neighborhoods for 10 years and of other cities\, both here and in Italy\, since 1997. As a designer he specializes in letterforms from calligraphy to type design. Paul has designed or co-designed 18 fonts\, including Kolo\, Donatello and Old Claude. As a historian he has written or lectured about Bartolomeo Sanvito\, W.A. Dwiggins\, Oswald Cooper\, Frederic W. Goudy\, George Salter\, Phil Gruskin\, Hermann Zapf and others. \nMeeting place and itinerary will be emailed a few days in advance of the tour.

This legendary event sells out fast\, so get your tickets while you can. \nNote: Doors open at 6:00pm - The event starts promptly at 6:30pm. \nNicole Caputo is an award-winning New York graphic designer who has been specializing in book and book cover design for the past 15 years. She is the Creative Director of Counterpoint Press\, the Art Director of Catapult and is also co-founder of She Designs Books\, an organization that celebrates women in book design. She was formerly VP\, Creative Director at Hachette Book Group. Awards include the One Show\, Communication Arts\, Type Directors Club\, Art Directors Club\, AIGA/NY\, HOW International Design\, PRINT Regional Design\, the New York Book Show\, the National Gold Ink Awards\, London International Creative Competition\, and the Publishing Professionals Network. \nAlex Merto is a Brooklyn-based graphic designer and art director\, born in New York and raised in California. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts. He is currently an Art Director at Farrar\, Straus and Giroux\, as well as a parter of Graphiatrist\, a design studio focusing on editorial design and brand identity. His work has been recognized by AIGA\, Type Directors Club\, PRINT magazine and The New York Times. \nJason Ramirez is an award-winning designer and art director with Viking/Penguin Books. Previously he worked with St. Martin’s Press and Rodrigo Corral Design. His work has earned honors from Communication Arts and PRINT magazines\, Type Directors Club\, the AIGA-Design Observer 50 Books | 50 Covers competition and the New York Book Show. In addition\, his projects have been published in several books related to graphic design and publishing. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second night of frank (and passionate!) conversation between graphic designers and type designers. Together we shape the typographic landscape\, yet we still have so much to learn from each other. Our first conversation was about collaboration; this evening\, let's talk about craftsmanship. \nOn May 8th moderator Charles Nix and panelists Christian Schwartz\, Jennifer Kinon\, Ksenya Samarskaya\, and Naomi Abel will catch up and examine our unique and collaborative process. The speakers will give a brief presentation of their creative processes and then join in a discussion. He has designed hundreds of books and typefaces\, and for more than 20 years\, taught at the Parsons School of Design\, where he also served as Chairman of Communication Design. He is also Chairman emeritus of the board of the Type Directors Club\, an international organization dedicated to furthering typographic excellence. He is a Type Director at Monotype. \nPANEL \nNaomi Abel\nNaomi is a California-born designer & art director who specializes in branding\, typography\, fashion and the arts. She currently works for Michael Bierut at Pentagram’s New York studio. She received her BFA from Boston University in 2009 where she studied Graphic Design and minored in Art History. She also studied type design at the Cooper Union under the mentorship of Christian Schwartz and Berton Hasebe. Prior to Pentagram\, Naomi worked at Mother\, Wieden & Kennedy and several prestigious small design studios. \nJennifer Kinon\nJennifer co-founded The Original Champions of Design with Bobby C. Martin Jr. She has developed brand identity systems for clients that range from the Girl Scouts of the USA to The New York Times\, MTV\, the NBA and Ad Age. During 2016\, Kinon served as Design Director of Hillary for America. She has spoken about the role of brand identity systems around the world\, served as President of AIGA/NY and was the first graduate of the School of Visual Arts MFA Design program to join the faculty. \nKsenya Samarskaya\nKsenya is a creative practitioner and type designer\, following her fascination with the nuances inherent in our visual and literary culture. Samarskaya has judged competitions for Communication Arts\, TISDC\, TDC\, and the SoTA Catalyst Award\, and served on the board of AIGA/NY. She’s developed curriculum and teaches at Harbour.Space University in Barcelona\, as well as fielding courses at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and The School of Visual Ars in NYC. Recent areas of investigation include type in extended reality\, and best pedagogical practices for creativity. \nChristian Schwartz\nChristian is a partner\, with London-based designer Paul Barnes\, in the type foundry Commercial Type\, and heads up the company’s New York office. Schwartz has published fonts with many respected independent foundries and has designed custom typefaces for corporations and publications worldwide including MoMA\, the New York Times Style Magazine T\, The Guardian\, Sprint\, and Vanity Fair. In 2007\, Schwartz was awarded the prestigious Prix Charles Peignot\, given every four or five years by the Association Typographique Internationale to a designer under 35 who has made “an outstanding contribution to the field of type design”. SUMMARY:David Berlow: Beyond the Quest for the Perfect Uppercase Partial Differential
DESCRIPTION:This free event will be streamed live from Google HQ in New York City on the TDC YouTube Channel: TDC YouTube \nThe YouTube event will go live at 5:5o pm EST\, and the program will begin at 6:00pm EST. Join us for a memorable event! \nThe last 30 years has seen a great growth in generalized glyphs and styles. David Berlow's talk will show what happens to and for typography when we start to get more specific about the fonts\, and thus the glyphs we design by having more generalized fonts. \nThe first part talks about glyphs and illustrates how different scripts form ideas\, words\, and texts. Next\, David will discuss how this effects the design of glyphs over a size range and then how this affects the design of styles that can be specified to work together in web and print environments. He will then demonstrate and describe inter-script\, inter-class and inter-style typography\, and conclude with a question-and-answer session. \nDavid Berlow entered the type industry in 1978 as a letter designer for Mergenthaler. He joined the newly formed Bitstream in 1982. Berlow left Bitstream in 1989 to found The Font Bureau with Roger Black. In 2008\, Berlow launched Webtype with Petr van Blokland and others.
