DESCRIPTION:The Type Directors Club and the Society of Typographic Aficionados are pleased to announce that lettering artist and illustrator Juan Carlos Pagan will be giving a special presentation on Thursday\, August 29th\, as part of TypeCon2019 “Nice” in Minneapolis\, Minnesota. \nPlus\, a we are hosting a screenprinting activity with Facebook Analog Research Lab! After the talk\, grab a squeegee and print the final layer on a design created just for this special pop-up! It's all happening right here!\n \nJuan Carlos Pagan is a New York-based designer\, typographer\, and creative director\, who currently serves on the board of Type Directors Club. He is currently the founding partner and Executive Creative Director of Sunday Afternoon. He previously held Head of Design and Creative Director positions at 72andSunny NY\, Deutsch NY\, and DDB NY. \nJuan has been honored for his work by the Type Directors Club\, Communication Arts\, The ADC\, One Show\, Graphis\, Cannes Lions\, Clios\, Fast Company\, and Print Magazine among others. His client list includes brands such as Nike\, Google\, New York Times\, ESPN\, Pinterest\, Smirnoff\, and Under Armour. In 2013 Juan received the prestigious Art Directors Club Young Guns award. \nThat same year\, he was named the top of Adweek’s Talent 100 and was subsequently nominated for Print Magazine’s New Visual Artists 20 Under 30. SUMMARY:Lettering Walk with Paul Shaw: Greenwood Heights and Sunset Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the adjacent neighborhoods of Greenwood Heights and Sunset Park that straddle Fourth Avenue and butt up against Gowanus Bay and the Upper Bay of New York Harbor. These are working class and immigrant neighborhoods that—fingers crossed—have not yet been gentrified.  \nIn both neighborhoods\, we will show you a mix of vernacular lettering (with Mexican influence)\, classical roman capitals and 19th century grotesques for government institutions\, a small bit of Art Deco\, and some 1950s scripts. We will take a small detour into Green-Wood Cemetery (established 1838)\, one of the historically most important cemeteries in the United States\, and we might finish up at a letterpress shop. \nPaul Shaw has conducted regular walking tours of lettering in New York City since 2005 for the Type Directors Club and other organizations. He has also led similar tours of Boston\, Buffalo\, and Atlanta for SoTA (the Society of Typographic Aficionados). \nPaul is the author of Helvetica and the New York City Subway System\, which has been republished by The MIT Press this year. He has been a calligrapher for over 40 years and has designed 18 typefaces. He is the principal of Paul Shaw / Letter Design and teaches calligraphy at Parsons School of Design and the history of typography at the School of Visual Arts. \nParticipants will be notified of the meeting point in Brooklyn prior to the event. (Note: The Type Directors Club in Manhattan is not the starting point for this walk!)

SUMMARY:Type x Graphic Design: Emerging Global Practices
DESCRIPTION:We explore this question through conversations with recent design graduates Pragun Agarwal (MICA)\, Ivy Li (VCU)\, and Beatriz Lozano (University of Michigan). Through their work\, these practitioners hailing from international and local backgrounds touch upon difficult issues of translation and reception of visual culture and ideas. What can all designers learn from their experiences? \nEmerging Global Practices is the first in a three-part Type x Graphic Design series on global typography and design by AIGA NY and the TDC. \nGraphic designer and educator Jason Alejandro will moderate the panel\, which includes recent graduates from the Maryland Institute College of Art\, University of Michigan\, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Each panelist will present their work for 15 minutes\, followed by a 30-minute discussion. \nEvent Series: Fresh Dialogue\nType x Graphic Design: Emerging Global Practices is part of the Fresh Dialogue event series. These events are critical discussions that focus on current events\, issues of cultural relevance and emerging topics in the world of design. \nPanel Moderator\nJason Alejandro is a graphic designer and educator based between New York City and Philadelphia. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at the College of New Jersey. Jason has taught at Rutgers University\, Kean University\, Lehigh University\, and the University of Pennsylvania. Previously\, he was an art director at JK Design and a book designer at Princeton University Press. Jason received an MFA in Graphic Design from Vermont College of Fine Arts\, and his work has been recognized by Communication Arts\, Society of Typographic Arts\, Association of University Presses\, and the Book Industry Guild of New York. He maintains an independent design practice focused on publishing\, education\, and typography. Select clients include Johnson & Johnson\, Princeton University\, MIT Press\, University of Chicago Press\, Verso Books\, and Rolling Stone. \nSpeakers\n\nPragun Agarwal is a graphic designer from India\, and a fresh MFA Graduate in Graphic Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA)\, Baltimore. He is originally from New Delhi where he was born and brought up before moving to Ahmedabad to finish his design education from the National Institute of Design (NID). After his graduation in 2014\, he worked at Codesign for three years and successfully completed an internship at Pentagram in the summer of 2018. Pragun has constantly pushed his learning of calligraphy\, lettering\, and typography by experimenting with different styles\, techniques and tools. He has applied his understanding of these mediums in different personal and commercial projects over the last few years. \nYixue (aka Ivy Li) is a designer working between China and the United States. She is interested in how global products/identities are made\, transported and consumed\, and the inevitable ‘mis-’ in acts of transmission. She stands with things and humans that are misread\, mispronounced\, misfitted and mistranslated when they traverse social and cultural borders. She holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and is currently at Wkshps. \nBeatriz Lozano is a designer at Sunday Afternoon and former designer in residence at Morcos Key. She holds a BFA from the University of Michigan and is currently exploring custom type\, 3D\, and motion design. SUMMARY:Type x Graphic Design: Global Typography
DESCRIPTION:Digital communication allows us to reach beyond geographic and typographical barriers. What does it mean to practice design and typography when nationalities\, languages\, and scripts are in constant interaction? This panel discussion brings together designers whose work stretches beyond Latin typography to share their perspectives on designing for a global world. \nGlobal Typography is the second in a three-part Type x Graphic Design series on global typography and design by AIGA NY and the TDC. \nType designer Ksenya Samarskaya (Samarskaya & Partners) with moderate a panel that includes Wael Morcos (Morcos Key)\, Chris Wu (Wkshps)\, and Caspar Lam & YuJune Park (Synoptic Office) to discuss the global aspects of typography. The discussion will cover a range of questions\, including: \n\nHow do these projects begin?\nWhy is this work important?\nHow do you respectfully design as a non-native reader?\nHow do you harmonize between scripts that have different cultural/visual history?\n\nEach panelist will have 15 minutes to present their work followed by a 30-minute moderated discussion. \nEvent Series: Fresh Dialogue\nType x Graphic Design: Global Typography is part of the Fresh Dialogue event series. These events are critical discussions that focus on current events\, issues of cultural relevance and emerging topics in the world of design. \nPanel Moderator\nKsenya Samarskaya is a creative practitioner and type designer\, following her fascination with the nuances inherent in our visual and literary culture. Samarskaya has judged competitions for Communication Arts\, TISDC\, TDC\, and the SoTA Catalyst Award\, and served on the board of AIGA NY. She’s developed curriculum and teaches at Harbour.Space University in Barcelona\, as well as fielding courses at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and The School of Visual Arts in NYC. Recent areas of investigation include type in extended reality\, and best pedagogical practices for creativity. \nSpeakers\nWael Morcos is a graphic designer and type designer from Beirut\, Lebanon. Upon receiving his BA in Graphic Design from Notre Dame University (Lebanon)\, he spent three years developing identities and Arabic-Latin bilingual typefaces\, in addition to working in print and exhibition design. Wael received his MFA from RISD in 2013\, after which he moved to New York and worked with several studios in the city before founding Morcos Key. Wael has been featured in Print Magazine’s 15 under 30\, was named a Young Gun by the Art Directors Club and an Ascender by the Type Directors Club. \nChris Wu is a designer and creative director based in New York. He is a partner of the multidisciplinary design practice Wkshps. Previously\, he was a principal of the design studio Project Projects\, winner of the Cooper Hewitt’s National Design Award. Chris has collaborated with clients such as the Guggenheim Museum\, M+ Museum\, David Zwirner\, New Museum\, Para Site (Hong Kong)\, The Met\, James Cohan\, MoMA\, Albright-Knox Art Gallery\, SculptureCenter\, Asia Art Archive\, Modern Media Group (Shanghai)\, The Vera List Center for Arts and Politics\, among others. Chris received his Master’s degree in Communications Design at Pratt Institute. \n\nYuJune Park is the co-founder of Synoptic Office and the Associate Director of Communication Design at Parsons School of Design. She served as the Program Director from 2014–2017. Her work has been recognized by the AIGA\, the I.D. Annual Design Review\, and the Art Director’s Club Awards. She holds an MFA in Graphic Design from Yale University and a BFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. YuJune has worked for and collaborated with several studios including Base Design\, Graphic Thought Facility\, and Rockwell Lab for a variety of clients including the Museum of Modern Art\, Milk Studios\, the Davis Museum\, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition to teaching\, YuJune speaks widely on design education and typography\, most recently at Typographics\, Northside Festival\, and AIGA NY. \nSynoptic Office was founded by Caspar Lam and YuJune Park. It is a multidisciplinary design studio operating in the space between design\, technology\, and education. The studio’s work has been exhibited internationally and recognized by Fast Company Design\, iDn\, Neshan\, Etapes\, and It’s Nice That. Synoptic Office was selected to participate in BIO23\, the 23rd Biennial of Design at the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana\, Slovenia and has exhibited at the Ningbo Museum of Art in China and the 26th International Biennial of Graphic Design in Brno. \nCaspar Lam\, the co-founder of Synoptic Office\,  holds an MFA from Yale and degrees in biology and design from the University of Texas at Austin. His work with cultural and fashion clients includes the Guggenheim Museum\, Ohne Titel\, and Vogue China. Adobe\, AIGA\, and ID Design Review have recognized his work. Previously\, Caspar led design and digital strategy for Artstor\, an Andre Mellon Foundation-funded non-profit to develop digital products related to metadata and publishing for institutions such asHarvard\, Cornell\, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He has been a visiting critic at the Hong Kong Design Institute and served as an Adjunct Associate Research Scholar at Columbia University’s GSAPP. Caspar regularly writes and speaks about design\, most recently at Typographics and the TDC. If you attend\, be sure to bring a wrapped book of interest to Typophiles to join in the group's traditional Holiday Grab Bag. \n \nMaxim will discuss his love affair with type\, and his persistent efforts to bring Russia back to the global typographic marketplace: exhibitions\, competitions and exchanges he arranged for—even in the midst of the Cold War. He will talk about the books he designed\, comment on the formatting tools he used\, their typography and layout\, typefaces\, printing and binding. Maxim will also chronicle his efforts to select and have translated and published some of the best books on type and typography\, including a few he himself wrote\, edited\, typeset\, and laid out. Finally\, he will show some of Cyrillic typefaces he helped to develop for many foundries and designers worldwide. \nWidely regarded as a leading authority on Cyrillic type design today\, Maxim Zhukov enjoyed a prolific and influential career in book design in Russia prior to 1977\, when he began his 30-year tenure as the Typographic Coordinator at the UN in New York City. In his talk he will focus on his book design and art direction\, which has been credited with introducing page layout grids and International Style to Soviet graphic design.

Rob began his career teaching at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and Tufts University\, while serving freelance clients and agencies\, before founding a book publishing enterprise that included Alphabet Press (graphic design)\, Picture Book Studio (children’s books)\, and Rabbit Ears Books (book/audio packages)\, which was eventually acquired by Simon & Schuster. Prior to founding Letterform Archive\, he served as a creative and marketing consultant with clients in the hospitality\, technology\, and financial industries. \nKate Long\, Librarian​\, has a profound interest in book arts\, typography\, and concrete poetry\, stemming from high school where she made art with abandoned Letraset\, and later as the editor of a literary magazine where she enjoyed working with designers\, artists\, and writers. She also gained an appreciation for 20th-century graphic design while at the award-winning studio\, Office. Kate earned her MLIS through Drexel University\, which will serve her well as she helps to preserve and catalog the collection. She relishes helping people access the things that interest them. \nStephen “Stewf” Coles\, Associate Curator & Editorial Director\, joined the staff after serving on the organization's Board of Directors since its inception. Born in Salt Lake City\, he moved to San Francisco in 2004 to serve as FontShop’s creative director. He later worked as an independent consultant\, connecting font makers with font users\, and wrote the book ​The Anatomy of Type​. With his background in design and journalism\, combined with an obsession for type history\, Stephen is responsible for the online face and voice of the Archive\, and helps to shape the future of the collection. He will continue to publish the influential websites ​Typographica​ and ​Fonts In Use\,​ which will now frequently feature content from the Archive. \nThe design team – Murray Grigo-McMahon\, Jon Sueda\, and chris hamamoto \nMurray Grigo-McMahon is a Brit who’s made his way to the West Coast via Sweden and Denmark. He trained as a graphic designer and quickly moved to digital in the mid ’90s\, starting out as Penguin UK’s first in-house web designer. These days he looks after the product design teams over at NextRoll and spends his free time helping out with data intensive design projects and writing very bad code. \nOriginally from Hawaii\, Jon Sueda has practiced design everywhere from Honolulu to Holland. After earning his MFA in Graphic Design from CalArts in 2002\, he was invited to North Carolina State University to serve as a designer in residence\, followed by an internship in the Netherlands with Studio Dumbar. In 2004\, Sueda founded the design studio Stripe\, which specializes in print and exhibition design for art and culture. In 2007\, Sueda relocated to the San Francisco area where he served as Director of Design at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts for seven years\, and is currently the Chair of the MFA Design program at California College of the Arts. Sueda was the curator of the exhibition All Possible Futures (SOMArts\, San Francisco\, 2013)\, and was recently selected as a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale. \nchris hamamoto (b. USA\, 1984) is a designer and educator based in Berkeley\, CA. He holds an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and is an assistant professor at California College of the Arts. In addition to teaching\, he maintains an independent practice — pursuing his interest in how automation and algorithms affect social relationships and aesthetics — a topic he explores through graphic design\, software design\, and production. He has shown work and lectured internationally\, and has been recognized by institutions such as Printed Matter\, STA Chicago\, the Walker Art Center\, Hongik University\, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. \nAbout Letterform Archive\nLetterform Archive is a nonprofit center for inspiration\, education\, publishing\, and community. Rob Saunders\, a collector of the letter arts for over 40 years\, founded the archive as a place to share his private collection with the public. Letterform Archive opened to visitors in February 2015 and now offers hands-on access to a curated collection of over 50\,000 items related to lettering\, typography\, calligraphy\, and graphic design\, spanning thousands of years of history. \n

SUMMARY:TDC Letter Walk with Paul Shaw: Two Bronx Neighborhoods – Tremont and Belmont
DESCRIPTION:The Legacy of Letters / TDC lettering walk returns to the Bronx this spring to investigate Tremont and Belmont\, two contiguous neighborhoods in the middle of The Bronx. Tremont abuts Fordham University to the west and Belmont abuts Fordham to the south. These two neighborhoods are full of the usual lettering delights: public schools\, convents and churches\, graffiti\, candy stores\, movie theaters\, dry cleaners\, and funeral homes.  \nBelmont is known as the "Little Italy" of The Bronx. The stores on Arthur Avenue are famous enough to compel Manhattanites to make treks there to buy mozzarella\, cannoli\, cheesecake\, and other Italian specialities. We will end our walking tour with a meal in Little Italy.  \nPaul Shaw has conducted regular walking tours of lettering in New York City since 2005 for the Type Directors Club and other organizations. He has also led similar tours of Boston\, Buffalo\, and Atlanta for SoTA (the Society of Typographic Aficionados). \nPaul is the author of Helvetica and the New York City Subway System\, which has been republished by The MIT Press this year. He has been a calligrapher for over 40 years and has designed 18 typefaces. He is the principal of Paul Shaw / Letter Design\, and teaches calligraphy at Parsons School of Design and the history of typography at the School of Visual Arts. \nNote:\nThis tour does not meet at Type Directors Club. Registered tour participants will be informed of the exact meeting place prior to the event.

DESCRIPTION:The Type Directors is awarding Rubén Fontana its coveted TDC Medal for a lifetime of outstanding contributions to the field of typography. \nRubén Fontana was born in Buenos Aires in 1942. He began his career in the Department of Graphic Design at the Instituto Di Tella\, directed by Juan Carlos Distéfano. \nHe was one of the founders of the Bachelor of Graphic Design at the Universidad de Buenos Aires\, where he founded the classes of Typography and Editorial Design. The curriculum of his course\, published in Pensamiento Tipográfico\, was used as reference for the courses in Typography at several universities in Latin America. At the University of Buenos Aires\, he was also the Director of the Master’s in Typography.
