SUMMARY:Lettering Walk with Paul Shaw: Greenwood Heights and Sunset Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the adjacent neighborhoods of Greenwood Heights and Sunset Park that straddle Fourth Avenue and butt up against Gowanus Bay and the Upper Bay of New York Harbor. These are working class and immigrant neighborhoods that—fingers crossed—have not yet been gentrified. \nIn both neighborhoods\, we will show you a mix of vernacular lettering (with Mexican influence)\, classical roman capitals and 19th century grotesques for government institutions\, a small bit of Art Deco\, and some 1950s scripts. We will take a small detour into Green-Wood Cemetery (established 1838)\, one of the historically most important cemeteries in the United States\, and we might finish up at a letterpress shop. \nPaul Shaw has conducted regular walking tours of lettering in New York City since 2005 for the Type Directors Club and other organizations. He has also led similar tours of Boston\, Buffalo\, and Atlanta for SoTA (the Society of Typographic Aficionados). \nPaul is the author of Helvetica and the New York City Subway System\, which has been republished by The MIT Press this year. He has been a calligrapher for over 40 years and has designed 18 typefaces. He is the principal of Paul Shaw / Letter Design and teaches calligraphy at Parsons School of Design and the history of typography at the School of Visual Arts. \nParticipants will be notified of the meeting point in Brooklyn prior to the event. (Note: The Type Directors Club in Manhattan is not the starting point for this walk!)

The group attracts many distinguished typographers and the program is designed as a dialogue among all the participants. \nIn the week before and the week after the main conference\, Type@Cooper is offering workshops and tours that will educate and entertain conference participants and are open to the public as well. \nWHEN: \nThe festival runs from June 10 through June 20th. The conference starts on Friday\, June 14th at 9:45 am and concludes on Saturday\, June 15th at 6:00 pm. \n \nFESTIVAL EVENTS: \n\nJune 10-13: Workshops and tours\nJune 13-16: TypeLab events\nJune 14-15: Conference presentations\nJune 14-16: Typographics book fair\nJune 16-20: Workshops and tours\n\nDISCOUNTS FOR TDC MEMBERS: \nTDC members receive discounts on registration. Email director@tdc.org for the discount code.\nWHERE: \nThe festival will take place at The Cooper Union in the East Village\, with the conference happening at The Great Hall in The Foundation Building of the same college. \nThe Cooper Union’s landmark Foundation Building is in one of the liveliest and hippest neighborhoods in Manhattan. The East Village attracts tens of thousands of tourists each year and is a destination in itself. What better place to hold this event? New York is one of the largest centers of graphic design with several hundred design studios. Conference participants will experience first-hand the energy and impact of typography in a thriving city that is a rich pool of talent and resources. \nSince 1859\, The Great Hall of The Cooper Union with 855 seats has been a stage for educational lectures\, political movements\, campaigns for social reform and the creative arts. Here\, abolitionists like Frederick Douglass campaigned to end slavery and suffragists like Elizabeth Cady Stanton fought for women to have the right to vote. In 1860\, Abraham Lincoln gave the speech that propelled him to the presidency. Working people organized labor unions and civic reformers\, political movements\, the Red Cross\, and the NAACP all have roots here. \nThe Great Hall has offered a platform to Heads of State\, Nobel laureates\, and American presidents from Lincoln and Grant to Clinton and Obama. On June 15 and 16\, 2018\, Typographics designers will again take the stage and affect the trajectory of design in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Robert Finkel and Shea Tillman: Visual Memoranda - IBM Poster Program 1969-1979
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening night of our new exhibition\, Visual Memoranda: A Selection of Posters from the IBM Poster Program 1969-1979.  Curators Robert Finkel and Shea Tillman will be there to share their research about this corporate design venture and speak about the designers whose works are on display. \nThe decades following World War II ushered in an era of unprecedented growth for International Business Machines (IBM)\, as innovations in electronic data processing and the miniaturization of transistor-based electronics transformed the company into a multibillion-dollar colossus. \nDuring this period\, Thomas J. Watson Jr.\, president of IBM\, sought to elevate the company’s image as a forward-thinking\, technologically-advanced organization by hiring world-renowned design consultants\, including Eliot Noyes\, Charles and Ray Eames\, and Paul Rand (who designed the instantly recognizable IBM logo and held a remarkable influence over internal staff designers.) \nThe IBM Poster Program was initiated in the late 1960s by staff designer Ken White\, who had studied under Rand at Yale. It was also during this period that Tom Bluhm transferred into the team\, having worked as a contract illustrator for IBM in Rochester\, Minnesota. Shortly thereafter\, Ken’s former colleague John Anderson was also added to the staff. \nWebsite preview here. \nThis exhibition is open for viewing from June 6 until Thursday\, August 1st\, 3 p.m. by appointment only. The TDC office is closed on weekends.

SUMMARY:David Berlow: Beyond the Quest for the Perfect Uppercase Partial Differential
DESCRIPTION:This free event will be streamed live from Google HQ in New York City on the TDC YouTube Channel: TDC YouTube \nThe YouTube event will go live at 5:5o pm EST\, and the program will begin at 6:00pm EST. Join us for a memorable event! \nThe last 30 years has seen a great growth in generalized glyphs and styles. David Berlow's talk will show what happens to and for typography when we start to get more specific about the fonts\, and thus the glyphs we design by having more generalized fonts. \nThe first part talks about glyphs and illustrates how different scripts form ideas\, words\, and texts. Next\, David will discuss how this effects the design of glyphs over a size range and then how this affects the design of styles that can be specified to work together in web and print environments. He will then demonstrate and describe inter-script\, inter-class and inter-style typography\, and conclude with a question-and-answer session. \nDavid Berlow entered the type industry in 1978 as a letter designer for Mergenthaler. He joined the newly formed Bitstream in 1982. Berlow left Bitstream in 1989 to found The Font Bureau with Roger Black. In 2008\, Berlow launched Webtype with Petr van Blokland and others. In 2016\, with Font Bureau and other foundries\, he created Type Network. \nType Network: Website \nFollow David Berlow on Twitter: @dberlow \nRead more about David Berlow here. \nThis event is being held in association with NYC x Design:

If you are interested in attending the seminar\, please RSVP to Maev Brennan\, mbrennan@grolierclub.org\, (212) 838-6690 \nAlphabet Magic chronicles the extraordinary artistic achievements of Gudrun and Hermann Zapf with the most comprehensive exhibition of their work to date.  Zapf’s typefaces Palatino\, Optima\, and Zapfino (to name a few) are a part of our everyday lives in the United States and Europe\, as well as around the world.  He was also at the forefront of type technology.  Zapf’s Marconi alphabet design was the first typeface ever created specifically for digital typography.  Gudrun Zapf von Hesse secured her own design legacy through typefaces such as Diotima\, Carmina\, and Shakespeare Roman. \n \nIncluded in the exhibition are rare specimens of their typefaces\, landmark works using their typefaces\, original calligraphic works of art\, and examples of fine bookbinding.  In addition to completed works\, ephemeral process work for some of Gudrun and Hermann Zapf’s most important typefaces and publications offers a behind-the-scenes look at the masters at work.  Of special interest are sketches\, layouts\, and proofs for Hermann Zapf’s groundbreaking Feder und Stichel (1950)\, Manuale Typographicum (1954\, 1968)\, and Orbis Typographicus (1990).  As Robert Bringhurst has written\, Hermann Zapf has been “widely recognized as one of the most poetic of type designers\, or\, to put it another way\, as the author of some of the loveliest printing type ever made.” \nAlthough Gudrun and Hermann Zapf are perhaps best known for their type design\, over the course of their long careers they engaged with nearly every aspect of the book arts.  Hermann considered himself a book designer at heart\, Gudrun is a noted bookbinder\, and both were master calligraphers. \nCo-sponsors: American Printing History Association-New York Chapter\, Center for Book Arts\, Society of Scribes\, Type Directors Club\, Typophiles\, and the Cary Graphic Arts Collection\, Rochester Institute of Technology
