SUMMARY:TDC64 Opening in Bridgeport
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to the opening reception for TDC's 64th Annual Competition Exhibition\, The World’s Best Typography at the University of Bridgeport.  \nThe reception is open to the public\, with a short panel discussion by fontaholics to start off an evening of a typographic feast. \nEvery year\, the SASD Graphic Design department brings to the Schelfhaudt Gallery an extraordinary display of communication design\, typography\, and type design. This year is new and different in the best ways — new works by world-class graphic designers\, new works by new practitioners of design working in posters\, books\, identities\, interactive\, environmental\, editorial\, and work by graphic design students. \nThe exhibition features over 265 works from the annual TDC Competitions in Communication Design and Typeface Design. The exhibit travels the United States and throughout the world to finish its tour at the University of Bridgeport\, where the works become part of the SASD GD Archives. \nThe TDC64 exhibition will be on view until January 11; please check ahead on weekends and during the annual winter break (Friday\, December 12\, 2019 through Saturday\, January 11\, 2020). \nParking is available off of University Avenue or Ingleside Place.

SUMMARY:Type Design for Non-Type Designers with Matteo Bologna
DESCRIPTION:Get a crash course in designing type from Matteo Bologna\, Creative Director of award-winning studio Mucca Design. This (always sold out) 6 hours workshop will introduce you to the basic skills necessary for the wild journey into the super fun world of type design. \nThis class will teach you the basics of designing and generating a typeface with the font-design software Glyphs (Mac only). \nIn the morning session we will learn the basics of drawing a font\, generate the font\, and use it in InDesign. In the afternoon\, we will add additional letters to the font\, learning how to kern them\, add diacritics\, and produce the combined letters. At the end of the day\, we will not have a finished font\, but a respectable start and hopefully you’ll be infected with the type making bug. \nRequirements\n\n\nBasic Adobe Illustrator skills are necessary.\n\n\nYou must bring your own laptop with a full or trial version of the font design program Glyphs already installed (download a free 30-day trial). Sorry no Windows\, no Fontlab\, no Robofont.\n\n\nNo prior experience is required in font design\, but some experience with Bézier-based vector drawing tools is useful.\n\n\nAbout Matteo Bologna\nMatteo Bologna is the principal of Mucca Design\, where he also serves as Creative Director. Under his direction\, the Mucca Design team has solved numerous design challenges and created uniquely successful work for a wide variety of global companies like Sephora\, Whole Foods\, Victoria’s Secret\, Barnes & Noble\, Adobe Systems\, Bacardi and Target. With his team he designed the identities for a variety of now classic New York City culinary destinations like Balthazar’s and Brooklyn Fare. \nMatteo is also the principal of the new Mucca spin-off type foundry muccaTypo. \nMatteo is a past president of the Type Directors Club and former board member of AIGA/NY. He frequently lectures about branding and typography around the world.

DESCRIPTION:Join renowned signage designers Chris Calori and David Vanden-Eynden as they describe their experiences designing the signage for the first four stations of the new Second Avenue subway line in New York City. Their talk includes an introduction to signage basics\, a brief history of the subway and its signage\, commentary on using New York City Transit graphic standards and working with engineers and architects\, and various anecdotes about the project. \nSignage design is an intricate\, complex process that marries the graphic\, architectural\, and industrial design disciplines. Chris and David will show how typography with other elements are comprehensively combined to help people navigate the underground world of New York’s newest subway stations. Explore this multifaceted avenue of visual communication; there is far more to it than you would think! \n \nChris Calori and David Vanden-Eynden\, former principals of CVE Design\, literally wrote the book on signage design. Their book\, Signage and Wayfinding Design: A Complete Guide to Creating Environmental Graphic Design Systems\, is the go-to reference on communication in the built environment. They are Fellows of the SEGD (Society for Environmental Graphic Design)\, and built an award-winning\, internationally recognized design office devoted to making people’s lives better with thoughtful\, visually-compelling signage and wayfinding programs. \nTogether or singly\, Chris and David have spoken at professional events\, taught at notable universities\, judged design competitions\, and are current or former members of several design organizations. Their firm’s work has received numerous awards and has been extensively published worldwide. These are working class and immigrant neighborhoods that—fingers crossed—have not yet been gentrified.  \nIn both neighborhoods\, we will show you a mix of vernacular lettering (with Mexican influence)\, classical roman capitals and 19th century grotesques for government institutions\, a small bit of Art Deco\, and some 1950s scripts. We will take a small detour into Green-Wood Cemetery (established 1838)\, one of the historically most important cemeteries in the United States\, and we might finish up at a letterpress shop. \nPaul Shaw has conducted regular walking tours of lettering in New York City since 2005 for the Type Directors Club and other organizations. He has also led similar tours of Boston\, Buffalo\, and Atlanta for SoTA (the Society of Typographic Aficionados). \nPaul is the author of Helvetica and the New York City Subway System\, which has been republished by The MIT Press this year. He has been a calligrapher for over 40 years and has designed 18 typefaces. He is the principal of Paul Shaw / Letter Design and teaches calligraphy at Parsons School of Design and the history of typography at the School of Visual Arts. \nParticipants will be notified of the meeting point in Brooklyn prior to the event. DESCRIPTION:School of Visual Arts presents Look Both Ways: The Illicit Liaison Between Image and Information\, a new exhibition curated by Debbie Millman\, chair of the MPS Branding program at SVA. This exhibition brings together a wide range of typographic work from 60 individual artists\, including Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Shepard Fairey\, Paul Sahre\, Carin Goldberg\, Jenny Holzer\, Seymour Chwast\, Chip Kidd\, Kim Gordon\, Tim Goodman\, Paula Scher\, and more\, from Millman’s personal collection and beyond. Look Both Ways  is free and open to the public\, and will be on view from August 24 through September 21 at the SVA Chelsea Gallery.  \nLook Both Ways showcases the many ways in which words\, text\, and information influence art\, design\, literature and music. Bold typographic expression has become the cultural currency of communication and the centerpiece of connection. Objects and experiences all around us now contain an inscription\, an impression or a point of view.  \n“I am thrilled to partner with SVA to share this selection of typography works from a group of innovative and outspoken artists\, several from my own personal collection\,” said curator and MPS Branding chair Debbie Millman. “This exhibition is a stark reminder of the power language has to rule all facets of culture. DESCRIPTION:In 2013\, type designer Max Phillips followed his Irish wife from New York City to Dublin and found a close-knit\, fast-growing\, and welcoming design community. He'll talk about running a small type foundry in a new country\, collaborating with Dublin designers on Dublin institutions\, and learning what "Irish" means from Irish people continually answering that question for themselves. \n  \nMax Phillips is proprietor of the Dublin-based Signal Type Foundry & Drawing Office\, which specializes in type design\, lettering\, and branding. A former novelist and toy designer\, he now makes useful\, attractive things for clients like An Post\, Bewley's\, CBS\, Christie’s\, Citi\, FAO Schwarz\, and Trinity College Dublin\, and collaborates with studios and agencies in Ireland and abroad. DESCRIPTION:WHAT: \nThe 11-day festival is a forum for presentations about graphic design\, lettering\, web design\, publication design\, book design\, type design\, packaging\, branding\, corporate identity\, advertising\, and motion graphics. Importantly\, Typographics focus on new frontiers in-app and responsive web design. The international line-up of speakers includes emerging and established designers. The group attracts many distinguished typographers and the program is designed as a dialogue among all the participants. \nIn the week before and the week after the main conference\, Type@Cooper is offering workshops and tours that will educate and entertain conference participants and are open to the public as well. \nWHEN: \nThe festival runs from June 10 through June 20th. New York is one of the largest centers of graphic design with several hundred design studios. Conference participants will experience first-hand the energy and impact of typography in a thriving city that is a rich pool of talent and resources. \nSince 1859\, The Great Hall of The Cooper Union with 855 seats has been a stage for educational lectures\, political movements\, campaigns for social reform and the creative arts. Here\, abolitionists like Frederick Douglass campaigned to end slavery and suffragists like Elizabeth Cady Stanton fought for women to have the right to vote. In 1860\, Abraham Lincoln gave the speech that propelled him to the presidency. Working people organized labor unions and civic reformers\, political movements\, the Red Cross\, and the NAACP all have roots here.  \nThe Great Hall has offered a platform to Heads of State\, Nobel laureates\, and American presidents from Lincoln and Grant to Clinton and Obama. On June 15 and 16\, 2018\, Typographics designers will again take the stage and affect the trajectory of design in the 21st century.
