SUMMARY:Visual Memoranda: A Selection of Posters from the IBM Poster Program 1969-1979
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to drop in at Type Directors Club in New York to see our new exhibition\, Visual Memoranda: A Selection of Posters from the IBM Poster Program 1969-1979  through August 1. \nThe decades following World War II ushered in an era of unprecedented growth for International Business Machines (IBM)\, as innovations in electronic data processing and the miniaturization of transistor-based electronics transformed the company into a multibillion-dollar colossus. \nDuring this period\, Thomas J. Watson Jr.\, president of IBM\, sought to elevate the company’s image as a forward-thinking\, technologically-advanced organization by hiring world-renowned design consultants\, including Eliot Noyes\, Charles and Ray Eames\, and Paul Rand (who designed the instantly recognizable IBM logo and held a remarkable influence over internal staff designers.) \nThe IBM Poster Program was initiated in the late 1960s by staff designer Ken White\, who had studied under Rand at Yale. Tom Bluhm also transferred into the team\, having worked as a contract illustrator for IBM in Rochester\, Minnesota. Soon\, Ken’s former colleague John Anderson was also added to the staff. \nCurators Robert Finkel and Shea Tillman of Auburn University have curated this beautiful show and created a companion website\, which you can view here. \nTake a look at the installation of the exhibition at TDC and IBM in TDC's history here. \nThis exhibition at TDC is open for viewing from June 6 until Thursday\, August 1 by appointment only. Email director@tdc.org for an appointment from 9:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Friday. Sorry\, we are closed on weekends.

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk with Manuel Estrada: Painting with Letters
DESCRIPTION:Because we have had such an incredible response to Manuel Estrada's beautiful exhibit\, we have invited him to come back to New York and speak about his work. Take a look at the photo gallery here. \nPainting with letters is something Manuel Estrada has always been interested in\, as in writing with images. It is a way of summing up all tools to turn design into an object to examine or an image to look at. Manuel will talk about his book covers\, posters\, and logos that are built around the same principle — typography as the main tool of graphic design. \nManuel Estrada is the recipient of the Spanish National Design Award. His Estudio\, founded in 1989\, has offices in Madrid and Miami\, it has a team of 17 people and is specialized in corporate identity programs. He is a strong supporter of design as a fact of business development and its direct input in the success of corporations\, and has also being dedicated to teaching in many different institutions. His work has been exhibited in New York\, Chicago\, Helsinki\, Berlin\, Lisbon\, and many cities throughout Spain. \nWebsite: www.estradadesign.eu\n \nTwitter: @Estrada_design

SUMMARY:Type Walk with Paul Shaw: Downtown Brooklyn and Boerum Hill
DESCRIPTION:On May 19 we will return to Downtown Brooklyn to see what remains of its lettering past as well as to see what is new. We will also visit nearby Boerum Hill for the first time. \nWe will see classical roman capitals\, Art Deco\, and geometric sans serifs on courthouses\, schools\, firehouses and other governmental buildings; grotesque sans serifs on tenements\, churches and manhole covers; street signs on buildings; and\, of course\, examples of vernacular lettering and ghost signs. \nPaul Shaw is a designer and a design historian. He has been leading lettering tours of New York City neighborhoods for 10 years and of other cities\, both here and in Italy\, since 1997. As a designer he specializes in letterforms from calligraphy to type design. Paul has designed or co-designed 18 fonts\, including Kolo\, Donatello and Old Claude. As a historian he has written or lectured about Bartolomeo Sanvito\, W.A. Dwiggins\, Oswald Cooper\, Frederic W. Goudy\, George Salter\, Phil Gruskin\, Hermann Zapf and others. \nMeeting place and itinerary will be emailed a few days in advance of the tour. \nThis event is being held in association with NYC x Design:

SUMMARY:Great Typography on the Web with Variable Fonts with Jason Pamental
DESCRIPTION:New developments in fonts and the web allow us to practice better typography on screens than ever before. In some ways\, even better than we can in print. Get an in-depth introduction to responsive typography and the latest evolution of the OpenType specification: Variable Fonts. While traditional design applications are only just beginning to support them\, web browsers have embraced them for a lot longer. We’ll explore just how much of your typographic expertise can be put to great use on the web\, and look at what variable fonts can do\, and how much they can improve both our designs and the user experience. \n \nStarting with an introduction to the concepts of responsive typography\, you’ll learn what techniques translate to the web\, and what you have to anticipate will change. The real magic is finding the ways to bring sophistication to your typography while still embracing how that system can evolve and adapt as screen sizes change. Variable fonts take design even further\, allowing access to the entire design of a typeface—width\, weight\, italics\, and more—rather than having to limit ourselves to only three or four weights and styles on the web. \nWe’ll go much more in-depth into the new Variable Font format: looking at what axes of variation are typically made available\, what’s possible\, how it works to implement them\, how to find them\, and how to test them. From there\, we'll explore what this means for designing on the web\, and look at some more editorial design ideas to push our sites a whole lot farther. \nThis is meant to be a hands-on workshop working through implementing various typographic techniques and exploring a variety of variable fonts to show what they can do. We’ll also discuss how our current definition of typography is challenged by the ability for type to change in response to the user: either through preference or environment. \nWe'll be working with HTML and CSS\, though attendees can certainly opt to watch and listen rather than work along as we go. It’s also perfectly fine to come and work collaboratively if some attendees are more comfortable with coding than others. Some experience working with HTML and CSS is preferable\, but not required. \nRequirements: \n\nYou must bring your own laptop with web browser (a recent version of Firefox is well worth it: their developer tools are very helpful in exploring variable fonts)\nCode editor of some kind (if you want to work along with the examples we will discuss and create)\nBasic familiarity with HTML and CSS is helpful\, but not required if you prefer to just watch and list.\n\nJason Pamental spends much of his time working with clients to establish their typographic systems and digital strategy\, helping design and development teams works smarter and faster\, and running workshops about all of the above. He is a seasoned design and user experience strategy leader with over 20 years’ experience on the web in both creative and technical roles\, and an Invited Expert to the W3C Web Fonts Working Group. Clients range from type industry giants\, Ivy League and High Tech\, to the NFL and America’s Cup. He also researches and writes on typography for the web: he’s author of Responsive Typography from O’Reilly\, articles for .Net Magazine\, PRINT Magazine\, HOW\, Monotype.com\, and frequent podcast guest. Author of online courses for Aquent’s Gymnasium platform and Frontend Masters. He’s an experienced speaker and workshop leader\, having presented at over 50 national and international conferences. The real story: mainly he just follows Tristan and Tillie around Turner Reservoir\, posting photos on Instagram. \nThis workshop is being held in association with Creative Tech Week and NYC x Design.

SUMMARY:David Berlow: Beyond the Quest for the Perfect Uppercase Partial Differential
DESCRIPTION:This free event will be streamed live from Google HQ in New York City on the TDC YouTube Channel: TDC YouTube \nThe YouTube event will go live at 5:5o pm EST\, and the program will begin at 6:00pm EST. Join us for a memorable event! \nThe last 30 years has seen a great growth in generalized glyphs and styles. David Berlow's talk will show what happens to and for typography when we start to get more specific about the fonts\, and thus the glyphs we design by having more generalized fonts. \nThe first part talks about glyphs and illustrates how different scripts form ideas\, words\, and texts. Next\, David will discuss how this effects the design of glyphs over a size range and then how this affects the design of styles that can be specified to work together in web and print environments. He will then demonstrate and describe inter-script\, inter-class and inter-style typography\, and conclude with a question-and-answer session. \nDavid Berlow entered the type industry in 1978 as a letter designer for Mergenthaler. He joined the newly formed Bitstream in 1982. Berlow left Bitstream in 1989 to found The Font Bureau with Roger Black. In 2008\, Berlow launched Webtype with Petr van Blokland and others. In 2016\, with Font Bureau and other foundries\, he created Type Network. \nType Network: Website \nFollow David Berlow on Twitter: @dberlow \nRead more about David Berlow here. \nThis event is being held in association with NYC x Design:

SUMMARY:The Twilight of Letterpress: New York in the 80s
DESCRIPTION:Ron and Dean interviewed the various proprietors and photographed their shops\, their studios\, and representative samples of their work. Little did any of them know that what was coming to an end in the city was not only letterpress\, but the whole printing industry itself. Ron will show Dean’s nostalgic and evocative photos again in a re-creation of a talk originally given in 1984\, and reflect on printing in New York the last 35 years.\nPittsburgh Metal Foundry \nRon Gordon (in hat) \nRON GORDON studied printing\, typography\, and book design with two great masters\, Leonard Baskin and Joseph Blumenthal\, and then founded his own Oliphant Press in 1970 to carry on the tradition of fine printing and design. Beginning as a letterpress printer\, Ron adapted his style and skills as the craft shifted to computer typesetting\, offset lithography\, and now\, digital printing. \nHis work has been exhibited at the Amherst College Library\, the RIT Cary Collection\, and the Club of Odd Volumes\, in Boston. Ron has taught workshops at the book arts centers at Wells\, Wellesley\, Dartmouth\, and RIT. He has trained numerous assistants and interns\, and has lectured at libraries\, colleges\, and book clubs all over the country.

SUMMARY:Manuel Estrada: Painting with Letters
DESCRIPTION:The central idea of this exhibition is that writing and painting are two close activities that are in the central core of the creative process. Painting with letters is something Manuel Estrada has always been interested in\, as in writing with images. It is a way of summing up all tools to turn design into an object to examine or an image to look at. Most of works shown are book covers\, but the exhibition features posters and logos that are built around the same principle — typography as the main tool of graphic design. \nDue to the popularity of this exhibition\, we have invited Manuel Estrada to return to New York for a gallery talk on May 29. Tickets are available here. \nWebsite: www.estradadesign.eu \nTwitter: @Estrada_design \nExhibition: Digital Gallery \nTo view the show\, please email our director\, Carol Wahler\, for an appointment at director@tdc.org \nThis event is being held in association with NYC x Design:

SUMMARY:TDC64 Exhibition at AUT in Auckland NZ
DESCRIPTION:Type Directors Club is pleased to announce that its “The World’s Best Typography” exhibition is on view in Auckland\, New Zealand for the first time\, courtesy of award-winning design firm Osborne Shiwan and the School of Art and Design at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). \n \nDirect from its New York showing\, TDC64 Auckland is showcasing an exciting\, culturally diverse range of award-winning work from 36 countries. The exhibition is on display at St Paul St Gallery Three in Auckland from April 2 – 17. \nLloyd Osborne\, Creative Director at design agency Osborne Shiwan\, attributes interest in the exhibition to its global focus. “The Type Directors Club promotes diversity in typographic excellence through its encouragement of different languages in typography. We are proud to bring TDC64 to Auckland.” \nThe exhibition presents over 200 works in typeface design and communications design\, chosen from 1\,835 entries by some of the design industry’s most recognized mentors\, innovators and thought-leaders\, with work in dozens of languages. The communications design portion of the exhibition integrates both professional and student work and features typography in a wide range of forms -- books\, posters\, corporate branding\, logos\, web graphics\, film and TV titles\, products\, and magazines. \n \nDr. Peter Gilderdale\, Senior Lecturer in Communication Design at AUT\, sees the event as an important opportunity in allowing New Zealand designers to view work in its original form\, rather than solely on the web. “We are excited to offer this opportunity to our students\, and we hope that the exhibition will act as a venue for the profession and our students to jointly share a passion for typography. We are delighted to be able to work with Osborne Shiwan in making this important exhibition happen.” \nAbout Osborne Shiwan \nFounded in 2006\, Osborne Shiwan is an Auckland-based design agency specializing in strategic thinking and art direction. Creative Directors Lloyd Osborne and Shabnam Shiwan have worked with some of New Zealand’s most influential brands and their work has been recognised internationally within the areas of commerce\, arts and culture.

SUMMARY:Zapf Centennial Symposium at The Grolier Club
DESCRIPTION:This special event has been organized by The Grolier Committee on Modern Fine Printing. \nHermann Zapf was the first person to receive the prestigious TDC Medal in 1967. \nThe symposium speakers include: \n• Dr. Robert Bringhurst\, a Candian known for his work as a linguist\, cultural historian\, typographer and author of The Elements of Typographic Style \n• David Pankow\, Curator Emeritus\, The Melbert B. Cary\, Jr. Graphic Arts Collection\, Rochester Institute of Technology \n• Ferdinand Ulrich\, typographer\, writer and educator\, and type designer\, who is a doctoral student at the University of Reading\, United Kingdom \n• Julian Waters\, a former student of Hermann Zapf\, who works as a lettering designer\, international teacher\, and lecturer \nThis symposium is being held in conjunction with Alphabet Magic: A Centennial Exhibition of the Work of Hermann & Gudrun Zapf\, on view at the Grolier Club\, February 20–April 2. 2019. \nThe seminar is free and open to the public. If you are interested in attending the seminar\, please RSVP to Maev Brennan\, mbrennan@grolierclub.org\, (212) 838-6690 \nAlphabet Magic chronicles the extraordinary artistic achievements of Gudrun and Hermann Zapf with the most comprehensive exhibition of their work to date.  Zapf’s typefaces Palatino\, Optima\, and Zapfino (to name a few) are a part of our everyday lives in the United States and Europe\, as well as around the world.  He was also at the forefront of type technology.  Zapf’s Marconi alphabet design was the first typeface ever created specifically for digital typography.  Gudrun Zapf von Hesse secured her own design legacy through typefaces such as Diotima\, Carmina\, and Shakespeare Roman. \n \nIncluded in the exhibition are rare specimens of their typefaces\, landmark works using their typefaces\, original calligraphic works of art\, and examples of fine bookbinding.  In addition to completed works\, ephemeral process work for some of Gudrun and Hermann Zapf’s most important typefaces and publications offers a behind-the-scenes look at the masters at work.  Of special interest are sketches\, layouts\, and proofs for Hermann Zapf’s groundbreaking Feder und Stichel (1950)\, Manuale Typographicum (1954\, 1968)\, and Orbis Typographicus (1990).  As Robert Bringhurst has written\, Hermann Zapf has been “widely recognized as one of the most poetic of type designers\, or\, to put it another way\, as the author of some of the loveliest printing type ever made.” \nAlthough Gudrun and Hermann Zapf are perhaps best known for their type design\, over the course of their long careers they engaged with nearly every aspect of the book arts.  Hermann considered himself a book designer at heart\, Gudrun is a noted bookbinder\, and both were master calligraphers. \nCo-sponsors: American Printing History Association-New York Chapter\, Center for Book Arts\, Society of Scribes\, Type Directors Club\, Typophiles\, and the Cary Graphic Arts Collection\, Rochester Institute of Technology
