SUMMARY:TDC Lettering Walk — 14th to 34th St: Chelsea\, Flatiron\, Gramercy Park & More
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT:\nThis lettering walk will roam from the west side of Manhattan eastward between 14th Street and 34th Street. It will cover Chelsea\, the Flatiron District\, Ladies' Mile\, Union Square\, Gramercy Park and perhaps more. These neighborhoods are largely residential\, but there are pockets of industrial buildings as well as numerous commercial strips. We will look at churches\, liquor stores\, apartment buildings\, 19th century department stores\, government buildings\, and public schools. The lettering styles we will encounter include Art Nouveau (a rarety in New York)\, Art Deco\, slab serifs\, grotesques\, classical Roman capitals\, and some scripts. There will also be a few ghost signs. At the end of the walk\, we will repair to a nearby cafe or restaurant for drink and food—and more conversation about letters and type. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nPaul Shaw is a typographer\, typographic historian and urban lettering expert. He has been conducting lettering walks in cities throughout the United States and Canada since 2005 for the Type Directors Club\, TypeCon and various American and European design schools. His art and words have populated walls\, packaging\, clothes\, products\, and magazine covers and one sanitation truck for Apple\, Nike\, Google\, Samsung\, MoMa\, Netflix\, Yves Saint Laurent\, Time\, the New Yorker\, the New York Times and the city of New York. His partnerships have included a global collection of clothing with Uniqlo and his own Nike basketball shoe for Kevin Durant titled the “Timothy Goodman KD15”. He regularly partners with not-for-profit organizations and schools to create art for communities in NYC. He’s the co-creator of several social experiments including the viral blog and book 40 Days of Dating (whose TV rights were optioned to Netflix). His second solo gallery exhibition Every Time I Fall in Love It’s Summer was on view at The Richard Taittinger Gallery in the summer of 2023. Timothy’s work often discusses topics such as mental health\, manhood\, race\, politics\, heartbreak and love. SUMMARY:From Typography to Monolinear Street Calligraphy
DESCRIPTION:Visiting us from France by way of Philadelphia—architect\, graphic & type designer\, and documentary author François Chastanet will present two sides of his work: his current research as a PhD candidate about graffiti of names’ handstyles in North and South America and the design process of open-paths or “single-line” font optimized for fablabs’ environments recently published on GitHub and Adobe Fonts platforms. \nHis presentation will show that these two seemingly distant topics are linked through a common skeletal design approach of Latin letterforms\, addressing contemporary handwriting questions.

DESCRIPTION:Matthew Tapia is a self-taught artist and designer born and raised in Hawaii with more than 15 years of experience working in New York and Honolulu. Over the past decade and a half\, he has honed his specialty in hand-lettering for a diverse group of clients. His passion for art and hard work extends his capacity to a wide range of projects: from custom type and lettering\, identity design\, and art direction; to illustration\, mural installation\, and more. \nGolnar Kat Rahmani is a Berlin-based creative director and artist. She was born and raised in Iran\, graduated in visual communication from faculty of fine arts at Tehran University and the Academy of Arts Berlin-Weißensee. She runs Studio Kat Rahmani. The studio specializes in typography\, type design\, editorial design featuring a strong expertise in multilingual design with a focus on Persian/Arabic typography. In contract with clients like: Deutsche Welle\, BBC\, Daimler (M.Benz)\, Lucas fonts. Her recent initiative project “Type & Politics” aims at freeing Persian/Arabic Type from its ideological and negative connotations. Following that helding typographic workshops at UDK (university of arts Berlin)\, KHB (Academy of art Berlin Weißensee) and University of Arts in Burg Halle. Also as a leccturer at various design conferences like: Typoberlin\, Format Club Berlin\, Type Club Berlin\, Type Thursday and Typographics NewYork.

She holds a Master in “création typographique” from Estienne school (Paris). She set up her independent practice in 2019 after working for several years at corporate studio Dalton Maag (London\, UK). Her work with different foundries and individuals in the art and cultural sector ranges from designing retail and custom Arabic and Latin typefaces to creating visual identities. Her approach to design is telling stories with letters. She regularly leads workshops and engages in the question of opening up Arabic type design pedagogy to broader audiences. \n \nKateryna Korolevtseva is an independent Brand Designer and Art Director from Ukraine. With a background in creative strategies\, Kateryna is passionate about branding projects that have a deep focus on typography. One of her personal projects is Misto font\, an homage to her hometown of Slavutych\, a city that was born after the Chornobyl explosion. Kateryna gives public speeches at design conferences (e.g. Typographics 2022) and writes for Design Week\, Alphabettes\, Telegraf.design\, etc. By sharing her knowledge about Ukrainian design\, culture\, and type design heritage\, Kateryna strives to put Ukraine on the map in the design world. \n \nParimal Parmar is a designer based in India. His interests revolve around multi-script typeface design\, identity and art. He has collaborated and published fonts with foundries like Typotheque and Indian Type Foundry. Last year\, Pentagram’s Michael Bierut and Jonny Sikov took home this single coveted prize in their leadership on the International Center for Photography. Want to know what went into the project? Why the judges loved it as much as they did? What it takes to create\, and submit\, such stellar winning work? Have questions as you prepare your TDC69 entries? This is the place to ask—  \n\n\n  \n\n\nHere’s what they had to say about the project: The new logo is a revival of the geometric monogram originally created by modernist design pioneer Arnold Saks for the announcement of ICP’s opening in 1974. No longer just a square\, the updated mark can now be reframed into any aspect ratio and the three letters can appear in an infinite number of forms\, reflecting the vastness of today’s image culture and the many ways that photographers frame our view of the world. The bold mark is set off by primary typography set in Publico\, a serif typeface originally designed for newspapers and magazines\, a nod to the relationship of photography and journalism. The identity framework has been extended to publications and promotional materials\, the digital design of the website\, and a system of signage and environmental graphics for the new location with custom icons built on the geometric shapes of the logo. \n\n\n\nModerated by TDC Managing Director Ksenya Samarskaya.

DESCRIPTION:Meet three of the eight TDC69 Lettering judges: Hussein Alazaat\, Huston Wilson\, and Ximena Jiménez\, and join the discussion on why lettering is having such a hot moment\, and how it translates around the globe.  \n\n\n\nHussein Alazaat is an Arabic calligraphy artist\, instructor\, multidisciplinary designer\, and typography enthusiast from Jordan. He founded ALAZAAT Design Studio\, located in Amman fulfilling his vision of offering his services to various clients and industries worldwide. Alazaat didn’t stop there\, he continued to establish his cultural space ELHARF House in Amman\, and he co-founded the social design initiative “Wajha” which aims to popularize the good design culture in the Arab cities. \n\n\n\nHuston Wilson built up his repertoire as a self-taught letterer and graphic designer through his love of design and curiosity and the occasional YouTube tutorial. When he's not working with color\, texture\, and bold shadows\, he adds African aesthetics to his work in homage to Johannesburg\, South Africa\, his hometown. \n\n\n\nXimena Jiménez\, is a queer lettering artist and muralist from Cali\, Colombia and actually based in Bogotá. Her path as a letterer started in 2014 in the academy while she was living in Buenos Aires\, time she spent studying and learning all the rules and the formal bases around the letter. In 2019 she met graffiti and started a new pursuit for something freer and more personal in her graphic lettering style. Her work actually moves between the formal bases and their own deconstruction through constant experimentation around textures\, irregular strokes\, ink\, spray paint and brushes\, going from paper or digital in small formats\, to big scale murals. Over the last years she has worked with companies like Facebook\, The Washington Post\, Adidas\, Nokia\, Adobe\, Munsingwear Japan\, and many others. \n\n\n\nModerated by TDC Managing Director Ksenya Samarskaya.

DESCRIPTION:Meet two multiscript TDC69 judges that traverse the globe\, Cheng Xuchang and Anuthin Wongsunkakon! They’ll show some of their recent research and work\, and join BranD Magazine in a short conversation regarding their outlooks on the current state of type design.  \n\n\n  \n\n\nMultilingual typeface designer\, documentary director. PhD student of Typeface Design\, University of Reading\, UK. Chinese Country delegate of ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale) and member of the Chinese Information Processing Society of China. Current research mainly explores the history of Chinese typeforms in the 19th and 20th centuries from the perspective of typeface designers. While studying the history of Chinese typeface design\, I am also paying attention to the innovations of international typeface technology\, variable fonts\, dynamic fonts\, and changes in the presentation of characters in different media. Regarding typeface design\, I focus on Chinese and Latin text typefaces and bilingual design. I also give Chinese & Latin typeface design workshops for BA and MA students. \n\n\n\nAnuthin Wongsunkakon (born 1973) is a partner of Cadson Demak\, a communication design firm and the biggest type foundry in Thailand that specializes in Southeast Asian scripts. He has been known as the key person behind the long-running BITS\, an international typographic conference to be held in Southeast Asia. He is also a co-founder of the CommMA international program at Chulalongkorn University. Anuthin and his team at Cadson Demak have been putting out work that is widely recognized by clients such as Monotype\, Apple\, and Google\, to name just a few.

(Please note that the panel is only in Mandarin Chinese.) \n\n\n\nAu Chon Hin\, is an acclaimed designer from Macau\, who mainly engages in brand identity and visual identity. He is the founder and creative director of UntitledMacao and is known for his forward thinking and bold visions. His works utilize vibrant colours clashes as well as simple yet figurative lines to bring a new visual experience to his clients. Au was awarded the Medal of Cultural Merit 2021 by the Macau SAR Government\, and his works have won many international design awards\, including the ADC Art Direction Association Annual Award (Silver and Bronze Cubes)\, D&AD Awards 2022\, Young Guns 17 International Youth Design Award\, The One Show Awards\, Tokyo TDC Annual Awards (TDC Prize)\, etc. Ultimately\, he and Untitled Macao are committed to spreading Macau's brilliant design all over the world. \n\n\n\nLI Zhiqian works in various fields with an interdisciplinary approach. He authored the book Xiwen Ziti de Gushi (Story of Western Fonts) and translated The Art of Calligraphy by David Harris\, Never Use Futura by Douglas Thomas\, Tokyo TDC Vol.32 by Tokyo TDC\, Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton (to be published in 2023)\, etc.. He is a contributor and broad member of The Type\, project lead of Shanghai Type and co-founder of 3type. His type works have won several awards including New York TDC’s certificate of typographic excellence in 2022.

SUMMARY:Unknown Lower Manhattan | A TDC Lettering Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join the TDC and Paul Shaw for a walk through Lower Manhattan. \nABOUT THE EVENT:\nThere is an area of Lower Manhattan that has escaped the realtor's urge to name and identify. It is below Canal Street\, east of Broadway (the common edge of Tribeca)\, west of Little Italy\, and north of City Hall. It is an area that was changing rapidly before the Pandemic hit\, with many shiny luxo-condos replacing decades-old manufacturing buildings and tenements. Much of its lettering is 19th and early 20th century in style: ghost signs\, slab serifs\, Tuscans\, grots\, Didones\, etc. \nThis lettering walk is a chance to assess the damage\, to see what gems still survive and what has been loast in the past half-decade. The walk will inevitably veer into adjoining neighborhoods and will end—for those staying throughout—with lunch or drinks in either Little Italy or Tribeca. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nPaul Shaw has been leading urban lettering walks since 2005. Along with over 50 walks covering all of the five boroughs of New York\, he has also conducted walks in thirteen other North American cities. Paul teaches the history of type at both the School of Visual arts and Parsons School of Design.
