SUMMARY:TDC Book Night is BACK!!
DESCRIPTION:Designing books and book jackets is one of the most rewarding and admired jobs available.\nBut everything about the process—from how brilliant designs are created and approved\, to how to build a successful career in book publishing—can be a mystery\, to outsiders and insiders alike. \nThree industry veterans will spill the tea and do some collective GATE-BREAKING\, to share some of the tips\, tricks and insights that they have discovered while charting their own unique career paths. \nHow do you break into book publishing as a cover designer? How do you get a great design approved when there are a dozen stakeholders in the process\, all with veto power? How do you ask your boss for a promotion\, negotiate a raise\, and know when it's time to leave for greener pastures? These are the difficult questions they will tackle. \nAn event for fans of book and book jacket design\, but also one that will empower creatives at every stage of their career—in book publishing and beyond. \nPlease note that this is an IN-PERSON event and will not be streamed. \nSo if you want to hear the crazy stories\, share the laughs and glean the wisdom\, you'll have to put on hard pants and join us in person for this amazing evening. \nFirst come first serve due to limited seating. \nTickets will sell out\, so get yours NOW! \nIn partnership with A2A. \nTDC Member/Student prices available for $10/ticket\, contact carol@oneclub.org to receive the discount code. \n  \nPURCHASE TICKETS \n\nPANELISTS\nMaria Elias\nSenior Art Director of Rise x Penguin Workshop a part of Penguin Young Readers \nRaised in Brooklyn\, Maria Elias has a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her career began in news and magazine. Once in books\, Maria designed adult books for a decade before moving on to Children’s at Disney Hyperion and later Workman Publishing. In 2019\, she co-founded Rise x Penguin Workshop\, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers. Maria’s work has been recognized by AIGA\, the Type Directors Club\, and others. She also writes about design and is a proud member of the Latine/LatinX in publishing community. \nChris Sergio\nVice President\, Group Creative Director\, HOLT / Macmillan Publishing \nPrior to joining Macmillan in 2019\, Sergio worked at Random House\, Simon & Schuster and was VP Art Director at Penguin Random House for many years. Sergio serves on the National Board of Directors for The One Club and is also a member of the Type Directors Club Advisory Board. He is a proud alum of both RISD and LaGuardia High School and was raised in Hell's Kitchen\, New York so long ago that sometimes he still stands on street corners—for extended periods—trying to hail nonexistent yellow cabs rather than call an Uber\, much to the chagrin of his family. \nAlbert Tang\nVice President\, Creative Director\, Grand Central Publishing / Hachette Book Group U.S.A. \nAlbert Tang is a New York born and raised graphic designer who happens to design book covers for a living. He has made stops at Penguin\, W.W. Norton\, Simon and Schuster\, and is currently the VP\, Creative Director at Grand Central Publishing\, an imprint of Hachette Book Group. DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT:\nNew York audiences are in for a treat\, as Barcelona-based letterer\, illustrator\, graphic designer\, Type Directors Club Advisory Board Member\, and Sunday Afternoon artist Marta Cerdà Alimbau returns to the Big Apple for the first time in several years with the launch of her new book! \nJoin us at Sunday Afternoon’s SoHo studio on Thursday\, October 26\, as Marta sits down with renowned designer Juan Carlos Pagan to discuss Image to Type\, her brand-new book that blurs the lines between her typographic and illustrative practices. SUMMARY:From Typography to Monolinear Street Calligraphy
DESCRIPTION:Visiting us from France by way of Philadelphia—architect\, graphic & type designer\, and documentary author François Chastanet will present two sides of his work: his current research as a PhD candidate about graffiti of names’ handstyles in North and South America and the design process of open-paths or “single-line” font optimized for fablabs’ environments recently published on GitHub and Adobe Fonts platforms. \nHis presentation will show that these two seemingly distant topics are linked through a common skeletal design approach of Latin letterforms\, addressing contemporary handwriting questions.

SUMMARY:Advocating for Design with Emily Cohen — NYC
DESCRIPTION:Are your clients not seeing the value your creative firm provides? Do you struggle to communicate your value? Does this impact your team\, your bottom line (i.e. clients taking advantage of your generosity)\, and your happiness at work? Our industry is at a value crossroads.  Our clients don’t understand the value that design brings to their business while our competitors\, colleagues\, and even our own professional associations don’t always do enough to advocate for and communicate our industry’s value. We also contribute to this value challenge by not advocating for ourselves\, which can result in our team feeling undervalued and disrespected. Does any of this sound familiar? In this talk\, we’ll discuss the current state as well as the perception of our industry’s value and discuss how we all can better advocate for our profession. Let’s get paid what we’re worth and ensure the design industry and the people in it are valued for their incredible work!  \n\n\n  \n\n\nAs a razor-sharp business consultant\, Emily Cohen has been honored to partner with 500+ leading creative firms worldwide. She has developed\, tested\, and refined key insights and strategies that have allowed her clients’ businesses to become more effective\, profitable\, and fun to work at. She is a designer by degree\, an avid reader\, dog-lover\, a trend-spotter\, a connection-builder\, and an industry advocate. She is also a frequently-requested main stage speaker within the creative industry and has spoken at hundreds of international\, national\, and local conferences and events.

With a background in creative strategies\, Kateryna is passionate about branding projects that have a deep focus on typography. SUMMARY:Best-in-Show with Pentagram — Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Want to know what it takes to get the coveted best-in-show prize in our annual competition? Last year\, Pentagram’s Michael Bierut and Jonny Sikov took home this single coveted prize in their leadership on the International Center for Photography. Want to know what went into the project? Why the judges loved it as much as they did? What it takes to create\, and submit\, such stellar winning work? Have questions as you prepare your TDC69 entries? This is the place to ask—  \n\n\n  \n\n\nHere’s what they had to say about the project: The new logo is a revival of the geometric monogram originally created by modernist design pioneer Arnold Saks for the announcement of ICP’s opening in 1974. No longer just a square\, the updated mark can now be reframed into any aspect ratio and the three letters can appear in an infinite number of forms\, reflecting the vastness of today’s image culture and the many ways that photographers frame our view of the world. The bold mark is set off by primary typography set in Publico\, a serif typeface originally designed for newspapers and magazines\, a nod to the relationship of photography and journalism. The identity framework has been extended to publications and promotional materials\, the digital design of the website\, and a system of signage and environmental graphics for the new location with custom icons built on the geometric shapes of the logo. \n\n\n\nModerated by TDC Managing Director Ksenya Samarskaya.

SUMMARY:TDC69 Lettering Judges — Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Meet three of the eight TDC69 Lettering judges: Hussein Alazaat\, Huston Wilson\, and Ximena Jiménez\, and join the discussion on why lettering is having such a hot moment\, and how it translates around the globe.  \n\n\n\nHussein Alazaat is an Arabic calligraphy artist\, instructor\, multidisciplinary designer\, and typography enthusiast from Jordan. He founded ALAZAAT Design Studio\, located in Amman fulfilling his vision of offering his services to various clients and industries worldwide. Alazaat didn’t stop there\, he continued to establish his cultural space ELHARF House in Amman\, and he co-founded the social design initiative “Wajha” which aims to popularize the good design culture in the Arab cities. \n\n\n\nHuston Wilson built up his repertoire as a self-taught letterer and graphic designer through his love of design and curiosity and the occasional YouTube tutorial. When he's not working with color\, texture\, and bold shadows\, he adds African aesthetics to his work in homage to Johannesburg\, South Africa\, his hometown. \n\n\n\nXimena Jiménez\, is a queer lettering artist and muralist from Cali\, Colombia and actually based in Bogotá. Her path as a letterer started in 2014 in the academy while she was living in Buenos Aires\, time she spent studying and learning all the rules and the formal bases around the letter. In 2019 she met graffiti and started a new pursuit for something freer and more personal in her graphic lettering style. Her work actually moves between the formal bases and their own deconstruction through constant experimentation around textures\, irregular strokes\, ink\, spray paint and brushes\, going from paper or digital in small formats\, to big scale murals. Over the last years she has worked with companies like Facebook\, The Washington Post\, Adidas\, Nokia\, Adobe\, Munsingwear Japan\, and many others. \n\n\n\nModerated by TDC Managing Director Ksenya Samarskaya.
