SUMMARY:Greco Design
DESCRIPTION:Our home was built in the late 1950s\, at the height of the Brazilian modernist movement. We revitalized the space while maintaining its original features\, materials and finishing. As time has passed\, we have acquired a selection of furniture from designers of the same period. All of this contributes to creating a unique atmosphere\, which fosters relationships between people\, reinforces existing bonds and contributes to new experiences.

SUMMARY:Advocating for Design with Emily Cohen — NYC
DESCRIPTION:Are your clients not seeing the value your creative firm provides? Do you struggle to communicate your value? Does this impact your team\, your bottom line (i.e. clients taking advantage of your generosity)\, and your happiness at work? Our industry is at a value crossroads.  Our clients don’t understand the value that design brings to their business while our competitors\, colleagues\, and even our own professional associations don’t always do enough to advocate for and communicate our industry’s value. We also contribute to this value challenge by not advocating for ourselves\, which can result in our team feeling undervalued and disrespected. Does any of this sound familiar? In this talk\, we’ll discuss the current state as well as the perception of our industry’s value and discuss how we all can better advocate for our profession. Let’s get paid what we’re worth and ensure the design industry and the people in it are valued for their incredible work!  \n\n\n  \n\n\nAs a razor-sharp business consultant\, Emily Cohen has been honored to partner with 500+ leading creative firms worldwide. She has developed\, tested\, and refined key insights and strategies that have allowed her clients’ businesses to become more effective\, profitable\, and fun to work at. She is a designer by degree\, an avid reader\, dog-lover\, a trend-spotter\, a connection-builder\, and an industry advocate. She is also a frequently-requested main stage speaker within the creative industry and has spoken at hundreds of international\, national\, and local conferences and events.

SUMMARY:#TDC69 Type Design Judges Online Panel
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT\nMeet three of the eight TDC69 Type Design judges: Naïma Ben Ayed\, Kateryna Korolevtseva\, and Parimal Parmar\, and join the discussion on global type design today. Moderated by Kimya Gandhi. \nONLINE\nThursday\, February 16\, 2023\n11:00 AM – 12:30 PM EST \n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\nNaïma Ben Ayed is an independent type and graphic designer from France\, based in London\, UK. She holds a Master in “création typographique” from Estienne school (Paris). She set up her independent practice in 2019 after working for several years at corporate studio Dalton Maag (London\, UK). Her work with different foundries and individuals in the art and cultural sector ranges from designing retail and custom Arabic and Latin typefaces to creating visual identities. Her approach to design is telling stories with letters. She regularly leads workshops and engages in the question of opening up Arabic type design pedagogy to broader audiences. \n \nKateryna Korolevtseva is an independent Brand Designer and Art Director from Ukraine. With a background in creative strategies\, Kateryna is passionate about branding projects that have a deep focus on typography. One of her personal projects is Misto font\, an homage to her hometown of Slavutych\, a city that was born after the Chornobyl explosion. Kateryna gives public speeches at design conferences (e.g. Typographics 2022) and writes for Design Week\, Alphabettes\, Telegraf.design\, etc. By sharing her knowledge about Ukrainian design\, culture\, and type design heritage\, Kateryna strives to put Ukraine on the map in the design world. \n \nParimal Parmar is a designer based in India. His interests revolve around multi-script typeface design\, identity and art. He has collaborated and published fonts with foundries like Typotheque and Indian Type Foundry. After completing his Master's from Atelier National de Recherche Typographique (ANRT) in 2021\, he resumed his research and design practices in New Delhi and continues teaching in various design schools across the country. \nModerated by TDC Advisory Board Member Kimya Gandhi.

SUMMARY:Best-in-Show with Pentagram — Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Want to know what it takes to get the coveted best-in-show prize in our annual competition? Last year\, Pentagram’s Michael Bierut and Jonny Sikov took home this single coveted prize in their leadership on the International Center for Photography. Want to know what went into the project? Why the judges loved it as much as they did? What it takes to create\, and submit\, such stellar winning work? Have questions as you prepare your TDC69 entries? This is the place to ask—  \n\n\n  \n\n\nHere’s what they had to say about the project: The new logo is a revival of the geometric monogram originally created by modernist design pioneer Arnold Saks for the announcement of ICP’s opening in 1974. No longer just a square\, the updated mark can now be reframed into any aspect ratio and the three letters can appear in an infinite number of forms\, reflecting the vastness of today’s image culture and the many ways that photographers frame our view of the world. The bold mark is set off by primary typography set in Publico\, a serif typeface originally designed for newspapers and magazines\, a nod to the relationship of photography and journalism. The identity framework has been extended to publications and promotional materials\, the digital design of the website\, and a system of signage and environmental graphics for the new location with custom icons built on the geometric shapes of the logo. \n\n\n\nModerated by TDC Managing Director Ksenya Samarskaya.

SUMMARY:TDC69 Lettering Judges — Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Meet three of the eight TDC69 Lettering judges: Hussein Alazaat\, Huston Wilson\, and Ximena Jiménez\, and join the discussion on why lettering is having such a hot moment\, and how it translates around the globe.  \n\n\n\nHussein Alazaat is an Arabic calligraphy artist\, instructor\, multidisciplinary designer\, and typography enthusiast from Jordan. He founded ALAZAAT Design Studio\, located in Amman fulfilling his vision of offering his services to various clients and industries worldwide. Alazaat didn’t stop there\, he continued to establish his cultural space ELHARF House in Amman\, and he co-founded the social design initiative “Wajha” which aims to popularize the good design culture in the Arab cities. \n\n\n\nHuston Wilson built up his repertoire as a self-taught letterer and graphic designer through his love of design and curiosity and the occasional YouTube tutorial. When he's not working with color\, texture\, and bold shadows\, he adds African aesthetics to his work in homage to Johannesburg\, South Africa\, his hometown. \n\n\n\nXimena Jiménez\, is a queer lettering artist and muralist from Cali\, Colombia and actually based in Bogotá. Her path as a letterer started in 2014 in the academy while she was living in Buenos Aires\, time she spent studying and learning all the rules and the formal bases around the letter. In 2019 she met graffiti and started a new pursuit for something freer and more personal in her graphic lettering style. Her work actually moves between the formal bases and their own deconstruction through constant experimentation around textures\, irregular strokes\, ink\, spray paint and brushes\, going from paper or digital in small formats\, to big scale murals. Over the last years she has worked with companies like Facebook\, The Washington Post\, Adidas\, Nokia\, Adobe\, Munsingwear Japan\, and many others. \n\n\n\nModerated by TDC Managing Director Ksenya Samarskaya.

SUMMARY:Unknown Lower Manhattan | A TDC Lettering Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join the TDC and Paul Shaw for a walk through Lower Manhattan. \nABOUT THE EVENT:\nThere is an area of Lower Manhattan that has escaped the realtor's urge to name and identify. It is below Canal Street\, east of Broadway (the common edge of Tribeca)\, west of Little Italy\, and north of City Hall. It is an area that was changing rapidly before the Pandemic hit\, with many shiny luxo-condos replacing decades-old manufacturing buildings and tenements. Much of its lettering is 19th and early 20th century in style: ghost signs\, slab serifs\, Tuscans\, grots\, Didones\, etc. \nThis lettering walk is a chance to assess the damage\, to see what gems still survive and what has been loast in the past half-decade. The walk will inevitably veer into adjoining neighborhoods and will end—for those staying throughout—with lunch or drinks in either Little Italy or Tribeca. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nPaul Shaw has been leading urban lettering walks since 2005. Along with over 50 walks covering all of the five boroughs of New York\, he has also conducted walks in thirteen other North American cities. Paul teaches the history of type at both the School of Visual arts and Parsons School of Design. With Patricia Childers he organizes the bi-annual Legacy of Letters tour and letterpress workshop in Italy. \n\nREGISTRATION:\nDATE: October\, June 23rd\, 2022\nTIME: 11:00 am – 2:00pm ET\nWHERE: Lower Manhattan (Starting Location TBA)\nPRICE: $45 ($35 for Members) \nThis event is discounted for Type Directors Club Members. Members\, please enter your email address in the promo code field to reveal discounted tickets

SUMMARY:TDC Lettering Walk—Midwood and Bensonhurst
DESCRIPTION:Join the TDC and Paul Shaw for a walk through Midwood & Bensonhurst in Brooklyn. \nABOUT THE EVENT:\nThis TDC Lettering Walk will mark a return to Brooklyn and a continuation of walk from 2018 that covered Prospect Park South\, Flatbush and Ditmas Park. This time we will venture out further into the wilds of Brooklyn to Midwood\, Bensonhurst and the smaller neighborhoods between them. These neighborhoods are very residential with parts of Midwood looking more like a quiet Midwestern town than part of New York City. Nevertheless\, there are still enough commercial\, educational\, and religious buildings with examples of lettering to pique our interest and satisfy our craving for the unusual. \n\nREGISTRATION:\nDATE: Sunday\, June 5th\, 2022\nTIME: 11:00 am – 2:00pm ET\nWHERE: Midwood & Bensonhurt (Starting Location TBA)\nPRICE: $45 ($35 for Members) \nThis event is discounted for Type Directors Club Members. SUMMARY:Type Design for Non-Type Designers
DESCRIPTION:  \nGet a fun 2-day crash course in type design with Matteo Bologna (mucca.com) in a workshop from the comfort of your couch. \nAbout the Workshop\n\nMarch 11th from 9am to 5pm ET and March 12th from 9am to 5pm ET \nIn this two-day class\, you will learn the basics of designing and generating a variable font with the font-design software Glyphs (Mac only). Go beyond choosing the same typefaces from the type menu to creating your own! \nIn the Friday session\, we will learn the basics of drawing a font\, generate the font\, and use it in an Adobe app or a web browser. In the afternoon\, we will add additional letters to the font\, learning how to space them\, add diacritics and punctuation. (You can purchase a one-day ticket for Friday only). \nOn Saturday\, we will design a bold version of the same typeface\, create a variable font—and make it animate in a web browser. \nClasses and workshops will take place over Zoom from 9 am to 5 pm EST with a 1 hour lunch break. A link to join will be emailed to enrolled students a day or two before the first session. \nAt the end of the class\, you will probably not have a finished font\, but a respectable start and a deep understanding about how fonts are made.  \nAnd maybe you’ll become a type design addict.  \nYou have been warned. \nThis event is discounted for TDC Members. Email director@tdc.org for more details. You can purchase a one-day ticket for Friday only. \n\nRequired Materials\n\nGet online with your Mac (macOS 10.11+\, no Windows\, sorry) and get Glyphs 3. The trial version suffices. \nNo prior experience is required in font design\, but some experience with Bézier-based vector drawing tools is useful. (This means that you have familiarity with Adobe Illustrator’s Pen Tool) \nParticipants receive an extended trial license for Glyphs 3 and can purchase their own full license at a discount. \n\nAbout Matteo Bologna\n\nMatteo Bologna is the principal of Mucca Design\, where he also serves as Creative Director. Under his direction\, the Mucca Design team has solved numerous design challenges and created uniquely successful work for a wide variety of global companies like Sephora\, Whole Foods\, Victoria’s Secret\, WeWork\, Adobe Systems\, Bacardi and Danone. With his team he designed the identities for a variety of classic New York City culinary destinations like Balthazar’s and Frenchette. \nMatteo is a past chairman of the Type Directors Club and former board member of AIGA/NY. He frequently lectures and gives workshops about branding and typography around the world.
