SUMMARY:TDC Lettering Walk—Midwood and Bensonhurst
DESCRIPTION:Join the TDC and Paul Shaw for a walk through Midwood & Bensonhurst in Brooklyn. \nABOUT THE EVENT:\nThis TDC Lettering Walk will mark a return to Brooklyn and a continuation of walk from 2018 that covered Prospect Park South\, Flatbush and Ditmas Park. This time we will venture out further into the wilds of Brooklyn to Midwood\, Bensonhurst and the smaller neighborhoods between them. These neighborhoods are very residential with parts of Midwood looking more like a quiet Midwestern town than part of New York City. Nevertheless\, there are still enough commercial\, educational\, and religious buildings with examples of lettering to pique our interest and satisfy our craving for the unusual. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nPaul Shaw has been leading urban lettering walks since 2005. Along with over 50 walks covering all of the five boroughs of New York\, he has also conducted walks in thirteen other North American cities. Paul teaches the history of type at both the School of Visual arts and Parsons School of Design. With Patricia Childers he organizes the bi-annual Legacy of Letters tour and letterpress workshop in Italy. \n\nREGISTRATION:\nDATE: Sunday\, June 5th\, 2022\nTIME: 11:00 am – 2:00pm ET\nWHERE: Midwood & Bensonhurt (Starting Location TBA)\nPRICE: $45 ($35 for Members) \nThis event is discounted for Type Directors Club Members. SUMMARY:Type Design for Non-Type Designers
DESCRIPTION:  \nGet a fun 2-day crash course in type design with Matteo Bologna (mucca.com) in a workshop from the comfort of your couch. \nAbout the Workshop\n\nMarch 11th from 9am to 5pm ET and March 12th from 9am to 5pm ET \nIn this two-day class\, you will learn the basics of designing and generating a variable font with the font-design software Glyphs (Mac only). Go beyond choosing the same typefaces from the type menu to creating your own! \nIn the Friday session\, we will learn the basics of drawing a font\, generate the font\, and use it in an Adobe app or a web browser. In the afternoon\, we will add additional letters to the font\, learning how to space them\, add diacritics and punctuation. (You can purchase a one-day ticket for Friday only). \nOn Saturday\, we will design a bold version of the same typeface\, create a variable font—and make it animate in a web browser. \nClasses and workshops will take place over Zoom from 9 am to 5 pm EST with a 1 hour lunch break. A link to join will be emailed to enrolled students a day or two before the first session. \nAt the end of the class\, you will probably not have a finished font\, but a respectable start and a deep understanding about how fonts are made.  \nAnd maybe you’ll become a type design addict.  \nYou have been warned. \nThis event is discounted for TDC Members. Email director@tdc.org for more details. You can purchase a one-day ticket for Friday only. \n\nRequired Materials\n\nGet online with your Mac (macOS 10.11+\, no Windows\, sorry) and get Glyphs 3. The trial version suffices. \nNo prior experience is required in font design\, but some experience with Bézier-based vector drawing tools is useful. (This means that you have familiarity with Adobe Illustrator’s Pen Tool) \nParticipants receive an extended trial license for Glyphs 3 and can purchase their own full license at a discount. \n\nAbout Matteo Bologna\n\nMatteo Bologna is the principal of Mucca Design\, where he also serves as Creative Director. Under his direction\, the Mucca Design team has solved numerous design challenges and created uniquely successful work for a wide variety of global companies like Sephora\, Whole Foods\, Victoria’s Secret\, WeWork\, Adobe Systems\, Bacardi and Danone. With his team he designed the identities for a variety of classic New York City culinary destinations like Balthazar’s and Frenchette. \nMatteo is a past chairman of the Type Directors Club and former board member of AIGA/NY. He frequently lectures and gives workshops about branding and typography around the world.

SUMMARY:Not Typecast: Two Women and their Typography at Mid-Century
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nBriar Levit and Anne Galperin will tell the stories of Ellen Raskin and Betti Broadwater Haft\, two New York-based contemporaries: one an illustrator turned book designer\, turned author and the other\, a multidisciplinary designer who was one of the rare women to design a typeface for Photo-lettering Inc. These are just two of the many histories featured in the forthcoming book of essays\, Baseline Shift: Untold Stories of Women in Graphic Design History. \nAbout the Speakers\nBriar Levit is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University. She studied at San Francisco State University for her undergraduate degree in graphic design and at Central Saint Martins in London for her MA in Communication Design. Levit spent her early career in publishing as Art Director of Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture magazine as well as an independent book designer. Her self-initiated publications are walking books that challenge the existing hiking guide genre. More recently\, Levit’s feature-length documentary\, Graphic Means: A History of Graphic Design Production (2017) which follows design production from manual to digital methods\, established an obsession with design history—particularly aspects not in the canon. She currently co-directs The People’s Graphic Design Archive with Louise Sandhaus and Brockett Horne and has edited a book of essays debuting October 26th\, 2021 entitled Baseline Shift: Previously Untold Stories of Women Throughout Graphic Design History. \nAnne Galperin is an Associate Professor of Art\, and Graphic Design program director at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She earned a BSc in Human Development and Social Policy from Northwestern University\, and an MFA in 2D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Before entering academia\, Galperin edited and wrote for the Macmillan Publishing Company\, was a freelance writer and researcher\, and designed books in-house at Chronicle Books. Her body of work includes book design for alt-press\, museum\, and art book clients\, including Four Walls Eight Windows/OR Books\, the Walker Art Center\, and Distributed Art Publishers. Her essay about American Designer Betti Broadwater Haft is included in Baseline Shift: Untold Stories of Women in Graphic Design History\, edited by Briar Levit and to be released in late October 2021 \nTDC Members get free access to this event!
