In this talk\, Toshi discusses the ways to approach a new writing system without committing yourself to a university degree. \nToshi Omagari is an independent typeface designer in London. After graduating from MA Typeface Design at the University of Reading\, he has worked for Monotype where he made typefaces for a variety of scripts including Tibetan and Arabic. SUMMARY:Type for Justice with Andy Chen and Waqas Jawaid
DESCRIPTION:Isometric Studio partners Andy Chen and Waqas Jawaid will share their recent work at the intersection of typography\, architecture\, and social justice. This includes brand identities and exhibition design projects for major educational and cultural clients including Google\, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum\, Center for Reproductive Rights\, and the Museum of the City of New York. The partners will discuss the opportunities and complexities associated with navigating this work as queer people of color\, engaging with complex social issues including gender equity\, climate change\, racial justice\, LGBT identity\, and immigrant rights. \nStudio Profile\nIsometric unites graphic design and architecture to create empowering visual identities and spatial experiences. Based in New York City\, we collaborate with leading cultural institutions\, universities\, tech companies\, and nonprofits to reinvent the way they present themselves visually and strategically. We express the missions of these organizations through visual identities\, exhibitions\, websites\, and signage programs that convey intellectual rigor\, aesthetic sophistication\, and memorable storytelling. We believe in design that transcends existing expectations by challenging cliches and stereotypes in visual culture. In collaboration with our clients\, we shape narratives and spaces of belonging. Through design\, we advance an ethos of inclusion\, equity\, and justice\, centering the lived experiences of marginalized people. \nAndy Chen studied sociology at Princeton University\, where he was awarded the Pyne Honor Prize\, the university’s highest general undergraduate distinction. He then studied graphic design at RISD\, where he received his MFA as a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow. Andy started his career at Pentagram\, where he worked on the rebranding of Bausch + Lomb with partner Paula Scher. As a Fulbright Scholar at the Royal College of Art\, Andy conducted ethnographic research on aging\, sexuality\, and social stigma. He is a contributor to Design Observer\, Design Taxi\, and Open Manifesto. \nAndy has spoken at international conferences including the London Design Festival\, Design Indaba\, RGD DesignThinkers\, and Kyoorius Designyatra. He has served on the faculty of the Maryland Institute College of Art and the School of Visual Arts. \nWaqas Jawaid received his undergraduate degree with highest honors from Princeton University and a Masters in Architecture with distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. SUMMARY:Not Typecast: Two Women and their Typography at Mid-Century
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nBriar Levit and Anne Galperin will tell the stories of Ellen Raskin and Betti Broadwater Haft\, two New York-based contemporaries: one an illustrator turned book designer\, turned author and the other\, a multidisciplinary designer who was one of the rare women to design a typeface for Photo-lettering Inc. These are just two of the many histories featured in the forthcoming book of essays\, Baseline Shift: Untold Stories of Women in Graphic Design History. \nAbout the Speakers\nBriar Levit is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University. She studied at San Francisco State University for her undergraduate degree in graphic design and at Central Saint Martins in London for her MA in Communication Design. Levit spent her early career in publishing as Art Director of Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture magazine as well as an independent book designer. Her self-initiated publications are walking books that challenge the existing hiking guide genre. More recently\, Levit’s feature-length documentary\, Graphic Means: A History of Graphic Design Production (2017) which follows design production from manual to digital methods\, established an obsession with design history—particularly aspects not in the canon. She currently co-directs The People’s Graphic Design Archive with Louise Sandhaus and Brockett Horne and has edited a book of essays debuting October 26th\, 2021 entitled Baseline Shift: Previously Untold Stories of Women Throughout Graphic Design History. \nAnne Galperin is an Associate Professor of Art\, and Graphic Design program director at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She earned a BSc in Human Development and Social Policy from Northwestern University\, and an MFA in 2D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Before entering academia\, Galperin edited and wrote for the Macmillan Publishing Company\, was a freelance writer and researcher\, and designed books in-house at Chronicle Books. Her body of work includes book design for alt-press\, museum\, and art book clients\, including Four Walls Eight Windows/OR Books\, the Walker Art Center\, and Distributed Art Publishers. Her essay about American Designer Betti Broadwater Haft is included in Baseline Shift: Untold Stories of Women in Graphic Design History\, edited by Briar Levit and to be released in late October 2021 \nTDC Members get free access to this event!
