SUMMARY:Type Design for Non-Type Designers
DESCRIPTION:  \nGet a fun 2-day crash course in type design with Matteo Bologna (mucca.com) in a workshop from the comfort of your couch. \nAbout the Workshop\n\nMarch 11th from 9am to 5pm ET and March 12th from 9am to 5pm ET \nIn this two-day class\, you will learn the basics of designing and generating a variable font with the font-design software Glyphs (Mac only). Go beyond choosing the same typefaces from the type menu to creating your own! \nIn the Friday session\, we will learn the basics of drawing a font\, generate the font\, and use it in an Adobe app or a web browser. In the afternoon\, we will add additional letters to the font\, learning how to space them\, add diacritics and punctuation. (You can purchase a one-day ticket for Friday only). \nOn Saturday\, we will design a bold version of the same typeface\, create a variable font—and make it animate in a web browser. \nClasses and workshops will take place over Zoom from 9 am to 5 pm EST with a 1 hour lunch break. A link to join will be emailed to enrolled students a day or two before the first session. \nAt the end of the class\, you will probably not have a finished font\, but a respectable start and a deep understanding about how fonts are made.  \nAnd maybe you’ll become a type design addict.  \nYou have been warned. \nThis event is discounted for TDC Members. Email director@tdc.org for more details. You can purchase a one-day ticket for Friday only. \n\nRequired Materials\n\nGet online with your Mac (macOS 10.11+\, no Windows\, sorry) and get Glyphs 3. The trial version suffices. \nNo prior experience is required in font design\, but some experience with Bézier-based vector drawing tools is useful. (This means that you have familiarity with Adobe Illustrator’s Pen Tool) \nParticipants receive an extended trial license for Glyphs 3 and can purchase their own full license at a discount. \n\nAbout Matteo Bologna\n\nMatteo Bologna is the principal of Mucca Design\, where he also serves as Creative Director. Under his direction\, the Mucca Design team has solved numerous design challenges and created uniquely successful work for a wide variety of global companies like Sephora\, Whole Foods\, Victoria’s Secret\, WeWork\, Adobe Systems\, Bacardi and Danone. With his team he designed the identities for a variety of classic New York City culinary destinations like Balthazar’s and Frenchette. \nMatteo is a past chairman of the Type Directors Club and former board member of AIGA/NY. He frequently lectures and gives workshops about branding and typography around the world.
