Segmentor is a typeface family and a tool to create live visuals and expressive graphic output using the Roland SPD-SX Pro drum pad. The family consists of 5 variable fonts that resemble different genres of music through the way they interpolate. The goal of the project is to push typographic boundaries, explore rhythm in type design and tool development for live performance visuals.
Segmentor is an exploration of what playing drums and designing typefaces have in common and what links could be brought forward. During my year at Type and Media in The Hague, I wanted to combine my practices to build a live visual tool that rendered powerful and experimental typographic animations for any show I would have in the future.
Segmentor serves as a typographic tool for animations, static imagery, and experimental typesetting. Its main purpose is, of course, to be played and to deliver the most when in motion. You can watch the full demo here. This typographic machine is built upon 50 masters with 550 characters and covers 92 languages.
