9th 2024 O! Daejeon X Soje-dong: Material

Description

Oh! Daejeon X Soje-dong: Material (2024)

Material project, hosted by Daejeon University’s Department of Communication Design since 2016, aims to revitalize urban culture by reinterpreting disappearing neighborhoods. The 2024 edition focuses on Soje-dong, an area undergoing redevelopment, to rediscover its historical and cultural significance.

While long-standing businesses over 40 years old remain, new cafes and restaurants are emerging, blending past and present. Rather than disappearing entirely, Soje-dong is transforming into a unique urban space where history and modernity coexist.

Visual Representation Methods

1. Deconstructing and recombining elements to express the duality of urban change: disappearance and renewal.

2. Intentionally removing visual elements to symbolize fading history and memory.

3. Altering graphic forms to represent the transformation of memories over time.

By engaging with these visual strategies, the exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on urban change, loss, and the possibility of reconstruction, offering a new way to experience and reinterpret Soje-dong’s evolving identity.
