Common Sounds
Description
A video wall artwork featuring sounds and letters from Kowloon City, as part of a typography exhibition to celebrate this unique, multicultural neighbourhood in Hong Kong. Through community workshops, residents were invited to write and talk, and the words collected were turned into motion type responding to their voices through oscilloscope software.
Combined with field recordings, this piece shows snippets of everyday life in Kowloon City, and reinterprets it in a typographical way that is unique to the area, but also familiar to everyone in Hong Kong.
The Chinese title of this work is a phrase shared by a young workshop participant: “voices in unison” (異口同聲), which reflects the community spirit that helped shape the video.
The artwork was created for the TypePOP Show, an exhibition for promoting typography and lettering to the general public, co-curated by Daisy Chu and Ire Tsui.
