Flux Watch Face
Description
The Flux watch face combines typography with color and movement to show the passing time. Color fills the face from the bottom as seconds count up and the numerals snap into new forms when the minute changes. The display of time can be customized to use Western Arabic, Eastern Arabic, and Devanagari numerals.
Tightly composed and ever-changing time necessitated the creation of a custom 10-axis variable font. The typeface includes variation controls for adjusting digit width and height, changing length and angle of stroke endings, and for shifting character proportions.
A layout editing tool was also developed, to enable designers to hand-craft time lockups. Working with a 60-second grid, the variation controls of the typeface allowed designers to find moments of unity and tension between numerals.
A total of 4320 unique compositions of time were created by hand, one for each minute of the day across all three language localizations.
