From Bauhaus to Mecca Exhibition Design

Custom handmade Arabic lettering formed the central visual and spatial language of the exhibition From Bauhaus to Mecca at Design Museum Den Bosch in the Netherlands. The exhibition presented the architectural legacy of a German Bauhaus architect whose life’s work unfolded primarily in Saudi Arabia, particularly in Mecca. The lettering became a key narrative device, translating the curatorial concept into a visual journey that oscillated between structure and ornament, rationality and symbolism.
The typographic compositions evolved throughout the space, gradually shifting from expressive script to architectural structure. Letterforms inspired spatial elements and scenography, becoming part of the physical fabric of the exhibition. The dialogue between classical calligraphy, modern simplified typography, and experimental Arabic lettering echoed the architect’s own design methodology. This approach enhanced visitor engagement and reinforced the exhibition’s central theme of cultural and conceptual exchange between two worlds.
