Gul

Description

‘Gul’ is an ornate type system incorporating Devanagari and Latin scripts. By finding a balance between organic forms and simple geometric shapes, it takes a contemporary approach to ornamentation in type design. This type system is named after the Farsi/Urdu/Hindi word for ‘flower’. This is a reference to the usage of floral motifs in historical ornamentation.

The design space and text styles, though unconventional, are inspired by the newspaper medium (Masthead>Display>Text). There are three ornate styles—Roman, Italic, and Condensed. The text styles comprise a serifed roman, an italic companion, and a sans-serif caption style. The final style is a high contrast Display derived from the regular weight.
