Heroes of Petanca
Description
Heroes of Petanca is a project designed to revitalise Petanca, a historically rich and inclusive sport, making it appealing to younger generations while creating cross-generational connections.
To achieve this, we developed a comprehensive visual identity featuring a custom typeface and a graphic system based on the sport’s parabolic throw. Our branding ensures that Petanca remains rooted in tradition yet appealing to new audiences.
Our project came to life through an amateur Petanca tournament at Club Petanca La Cènia (in Barcelona), where newcomers and veterans connected. To help participants get started, we created a pocket guide explaining the rules and serving as a score counter, as well as an in-depth Petanca guide for continued learning.
To reinforce the event’s identity and presence, we developed signage and flags, marking the tournament’s location and encouraging team creativity through personalized designs.
A key aspect of forging belonging was creating physical tokens, including a custom-designed Petanca ball case and an exclusive championship ring for winners, both serving as conversation starters and symbols of community pride.
To document and expand the project, we launched a lifestyle magazine, featuring interviews, club histories, and tournament recaps, as well as a website (http://www.heroesofpetanca.com) serving as a hub for event details and community stories.
Through this initiative, we proved that revitalizing Petanca is not just about preserving a sport but about reclaiming third spaces, bringing people together from all walks of life and ensuring that public, inclusive activities continue to thrive in urban environments.
