Roadside to Future

Description

The first part of From the Roadside to the Future introduces readers to the cultural background of Googie architecture and signage, revealing how these mid-20th-century visual symbols used dramatic shapes and bold colors to attract highway travelers. The second part delves into the inspiration and stories behind the six typefaces I created, demonstrating how historical elements can be integrated into modern design. The third part showcases the future applications of these typefaces, highlighting their innovative potential and practical impact in graphic design.

In the book's design, I pushed the boundaries of traditional binding by incorporating interactive elements into the book case. The letters on the case can be detached and reattached; when removed, they reveal the iconic shapes found in Googie signage, and when reinstalled, their varying heights represent the unique structures of Googie architecture. This dynamic cover design, much like the intention behind these typefaces, reflects an ongoing dialogue between history and modern design, showcasing the limitless potential for freedom of expression and innovation in graphic design.
