GQ Men of the Year Issue - Opening Spreads

GQ’s art team is composed of designers and illustrators who create one-of-a-kind typographic openers that enhance the photography and engage readers. For our annual Men of the Year issue, we strove to create a packaged typographic system that allowed for maximum creative expression for each story. For example, “Dwayne Johnson: The World’s Biggest Actor,” was rendered in the style of a graphic you might see on a brash muscle-beach tank top. While “John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous Grows Up,” we honed in on a DIY finger-paint effect. After a few attempts ourselves, we turned to our Design Director Keir Novesky's nephew, who painted the headline with perfect childlike messiness. (We of course advised on spelling!) This resourceful approach embodies the GQ design team’s unorthodox creativity found throughout the rest of the issue: See especially the Shaboozey opener, where poppy headline and languid subject are merged in total harmony,
