Concept:
Nordvest is an uncommon serif text typeface whose horizontals are just slightly thicker than its verticals. This gentle reversal of the conventional weighting of thick and thin strokes started as a mistake and continued as an experiment in subtle rule breaking. It lends the typeface a unique voice and texture, causing lines of text to strongly band together. The regular weights have been carefully optimized to be readable first and interesting second, while the heaviest weights are best suited to eye-catching display use. This versatile family of eight styles thus aims to be useful for instance in editorial, branding, or packaging design. Nordvest started as a graduation project in the TypeMedia program at KABK The Hague and was published by Monokrom in 2016.
